REGGIO CALABRIA, October 26 (Serie A) - Fiorentina begin life without coach
Emiliano Mondonico with a trip to Reggina on Wednesday evening.
The Viola sacked Mondonico on Monday after the coach claimed he was not being
given adequate support, and the reins were handed to the club's goalkeeping
coach Sergio Buso.
Buso took charge of training for the first time on Tuesday in a session that
was closed to the media, before the squad left Tuscany for Reggio Calabria.
Mondonico's departure comes after a start to the season where Fiorentina have
not quite got their act together.
It was supposed to be a joyful season for the fans whose club had ceased to
exist in 2002 after the much-documented financial problems under their former
owner, film mogul Vittorio Cecchi Gori.
A phoenix club rose from the ashes of what was Fiorentina and they began life
in the fourth division before winning two promotions on the field and,
controversially, getting a third courtesy of a special dispensation by the
Lega Calcio.
A considerable investment in players had led some to expect a glorious season
but that hope has proven premature with the club 14th and with an absolutely
identical record to Wednesday evening's opponents, Reggina.
Reggina occupy a relegation-promotion play-off spot while Fiorentina are above
them purely on alphabetical order in the standings.
Reggina coach Walter Mazzarri is unable to call on the services of Brazilian
midfielder orchestrator Mozart, who is serving a suspension.
Also unavailable are Gaetano De Rosa and Ricardo Matias Veron who were both
omitted by Mazzarri from the side to play at the Granillo.
Mazzarri admits that he does not yet know who will replace Mozart.
``I am still not sure of the final starting line-up,'' he said. ``I can say
that (Carlos Humberto) Paredes is one possible solution but I am ruling
nothing out for the moment.''
The match is also notable for a possible all-Japanese showdown in midfield
between Fiorentina's Hidetoshi Nakata and Reggina's Shunsuke Nakamura.
The match-up has attracted no less than five television crews from the Land of
the Rising Sun to the Stadio Oreste Granillo to see how the players fare
against each other in a direct head-to-head.
If Nakata was the first Japanese player to crack European football, then
Nakamura is the current darling of the `Nippon' supporters who frequently flock
to remote corners of Italy to watch their favourites in action - a trend that
started when Nakata played for Perugia.
Nakamura was eager to play down the personal duel, telling club website,
www.regginacalcio.it: ``Nakata has a very strong shot and we must be careful.
``I am happy that two Japanese footballers have the opportunity to play against
each other in Serie A and I am happy that we as a nation are getting so much
more recognition and gratification.
``But I am hoping that things will go my way.''
