Italo-American billionaire Rocco Commisso is officially the new owner of Fiorentina. It was confirmed on Thursday that Commisso had completed his takeover of Fiorentina, worth a reported €160-170m, and he revealed he had been working on the deal for three years. “I’ve always been a fan of Italian football and there are no words to describe how incredibly honoured I am to have the opportunity to contribute to writing the next chapter in the history of a legendary club like Fiorentina,” said the 69-year-old. “Florence is known throughout the world as a city that represents the best of Italian culture. “In these three years of talks to buy the club, I gained a deep awareness of how important the Viola are for this city and their fans. “I’d like to thank the Della Valle family for their running of Fiorentina over the past 17 years. “Diego and Andrea deserve great credit for having saved this club from financial collapse. They leave behind a solid foundation on which to build the club.” Commisso owns the fifth biggest cable TV company in the US, as well as the New York Cosmos football team. The Calabria-born tycoon moved to the States as a child and is on the Forbes 500 list of richest people in the country. He tried to purchase Milan last year, but Li Yonghong turned down his offer and a few weeks later lost the club to Elliott Management due to unpaid loans.
