REGGIO CALABRIA, October 27 (Serie A) - Stand-in Fiorentina coach Sergio Buso
got off to a winning start as his side nicked this game in the final minutes.
The club's goalkeeping coach, who took over the reins on Monday after Emiliano
Mondonico was sacked for comments made about the board, saw Fabrizio Miccoli
grab the points with an 87th-minute winner for the team from Florence.
Reggina had taken the lead through midfielder Carlos Humberto Paredes in the
59th minute, but Enzo Maresca began the Fiorentina fightback with a
73rd-minute equaliser.
With Hidetoshi Nakata lining up for the visitors against Reggina's own Shunsuke
Nakamura, the game attracted massive interest in Japan, and the residents of
the Land of the Rising Sun will have watched with keen interest as the two
engaged in their own private battle for superiority.
No fewer than five television crews from Japan were present to record the
showdown.
Nakata, the first Japanese player to crack Europe, could have shown his
emerging compatriot how things are done when his pass presented Martin
Jorgensen with an open goal, but the Danish international fluffed his lines.
That slip allowed Reggina's Nakamura, the new darling of the Japanese media,
to take the upper hand as his side pushed forward.
They got the break through 14 minutes into the second half when Paraguayan
midfielder Paredes scored direct from a free-kick.
Enzo Maresca then levelled the scores, pouncing on the rebound after Reggina
goalkeeper Nicola Pavarini failed to hold the ball.
Miccoli then missed a great chance to put the Viola ahead in a one-on-one
against Pavarini, but both he and Jorgensen redeemed their earlier errors when
they combined for the winner with just three minutes of normal time remaining.
The result, Fiorentina's first win on the road, propels Buso's men up to 10th
in the league, but leaves Walter Mazzarri's injury-hit squad stuck in the
relegation zone.
Reggina will have an early opportunity to get back to winning ways when they
play local rivals Messina in the local derby at the weekend.
Messina, based in Sicily, are separated from mainland club Reggina by only two
miles of water and it will only be a 10-minute ferry trip for the Reggina fans
wishing to attend the game at the Stadio Giovanni Celeste.
Fiorentina will be delighted with this win as they turn the page on the
Mondonico although Buso's appointment is only short term with former
Internazionale and Valencia coach Hector Cuper being linked with the vacancy.
