FLORENCE, October 31 (Serie A) - Managerless Fiorentina turned the tables on
free-scoring Lecce with a convincing win at th Stadio Artemio Franchi.
It took until the stroke of half-time for Martin Jorgensen to open the scoring,
but a second-half double from Christian Obodo and an injury-time fourth from
Giorgio Chiellini gave the Viola their second straight win since sacking coach
Emiliano Mondonico.
Mondonico was dismissed for criticising the club on Monday and, under his
interim replacement Sergio Buso, Fiorentina suddenly look to have found their
feet.
Serie A surprise packages Lecce came into the match as the league's top scorers.
But they failed to find the net for the first time this season as they were
given a dose of their own medicine by a Fiorentina side who had only managed
two goals all season in front of their own fans in Florence.
They were helped in no small part by the eccentric goalkeeping of Vincenzo
Sicignano, who was at least partly responsible for the opening two goals.
The half-time whistle was mere seconds away, after a first-half in which both
sides contrived to cancel each other out, when Jorgensen ran down the left,
feinted to square before firing past Sicignano, who clearly bought the Dane's
dummy.
The goalkeeper made matters worse 17 minutes into the second period when a
terrible clearance went straight to Hidetoshi Nakata, who chested the ball down
and played it to Obodo, who lobbed the ball into the net from 30 yards.
The game was effectively over minutes later when Lecce's offside trap failed to
catch out Nakata who squared for Obodo's second past the onrushing Sicignano.
The rout was complete in stoppage time when Chiellini sped down the left wing
before lifting the ball gently over the 'keeper.
Fiorentina's victory was as much one of tactics as of effort with three of the
four goals coming from long passes upfield.
The Lecce defence was simply unable to handle the directness of their opponents'
approach and they were fortunate that a thrashing did not become a humiliation.
The hosts should have taken the lead either side of the opening half-hour when
Fabrizio Miccoli saw his goal-bound scrape wide after hitting the shin of
Christian Ledesma before Nakata somehow managed to slice an inch-perfect low
cross from Enzo Maresca when the goal was at his mercy.
The visitors only effort of note came with only two minutes remaining when
Mirko Vucinic's long-range shot was easily dealt with by Cristiano Lupatelli.
The emphatic scoreline rockets the Viola up the table in Serie A and now they
lie only two points behind their third-placed opponents after a start to the
season that appeared to point in very different directions for both clubs.
