Emiliano Mondonico may have been fired, but the lifelong Fiorentina fan insists
that won’t affect his love for the club colours.
Mondo had surprised many by offering to resign after earning a creditable 2-2
draw away to Udinese, essentially pushing the club to make its decision.
“I could no longer stand the feeling I was just looking after the side until a
better Coach could come along,” he explained. “I couldn’t put up with the
constant doubts from the fans and club. The thought I was just passing through
drove me crazy.”
The former Torino and Atalanta boss perhaps thought he deserved more respect
after taking the team to an unexpected promotion this summer, beating Perugia
in the play-off.
“I will always be grateful to directors Lucchesi, Galli and President Diego
Della Valle for having given me the chance to live through this magnificent
experience,” he added. “I was and will always remain a Fiorentina fan, and I
accepted a pay cut in order to take this job.”
The list of potential candidates to take over is being whittled down day by day,
as Hector Cuper is now officially out of the running after signing a three-year
contract with his former club Real Majorca.
Cesare Prandelli has also pulled out after leaving Roma just a couple of weeks
before the start of the season so that he could look after his ill wife.
“I have never met President Della Valle,” assured the ex-Parma Coach. “We
spoke on the phone a few days ago and I confirmed that right now I am not
interested in a return to football management.”
Sergio Buso could even stay on after leading them to two convincing victories
against Reggina and Lecce, results that have put the club mid-table, but
candidates to take over include Roberto Donadoni, Alberto Malesani, Dino Zoff,
Delio Rossi, Alberto Zaccheroni and ex-Fiorentina boss Fatih Terim.
