President Andrea Della Valle has dumbed down Fiorentina’s Champions League
prospects by announcing that they are only aiming for a UEFA Cup place this
term.

The Viola are flying high in fourth after an exceptional season which has
seen them turn from relegation candidates to Champions League contenders in a
matter of months.

However, although the Viola are currently in the last remaining European Cup
spot with under four months of the season to go, Della Valle is urging a
large degree of expectation management.

"We mustn’t even think about the Champions League," he said. "We must keep
our feet on the ground even though Fiorentina have had an extraordinary
season and confirmed themselves to be a technical miracle.

Fiorentina have been hovering in the top four all season but have suffered a
comparative blip since Christmas, winning just two out of five matches, while
fifth-placed Roma have strung six consecutive League wins together to move
within five points of the Gigliati.

Della Valle’s is a refreshing outlook in an industry where results are all
important and the price for short-term failure often a high one for Coaches.
The shoe magnate has spent a large amount of money on players in the last
eight months but still insists on taking the pressure off Cesare Prandelli,
whom he recognises as having achieved a remarkable turnaround since arriving
in June.
