Vargas, who is nicknamed 『Catania's Roberto Carlos' by his club supporters, has had a magnificent season in Sicily, and has undoubtedly been the best left back in Serie A. His wonderful form since signing from Colon de Santa Fe in 2006 has led to interest from half of Europe, with Juventus, Milan, Liverpool, Barcelona and Roma all linked with making moves for him. However it has been Fiorentina and Real Madrid who have been most heavily associated with Peruvian, and indeed it was reported in Spain at the weekend that the player had agreed personal terms with the Primera champions. Catania President Antonino Pulvirenti has confirmed that both Madrid and Fiorentina are in negotiations for the player, but he believes that the latter will win the race. 「I do think Juan Manuel Vargas has played his last game for us,」 said Pulvirenti after yesterday's 1-1 draw with Roma that kept the Elefanti in Serie A.. 「I hope he'll stay in Italy, because he can still improve a great deal in Serie A.
