莉娃篇:
Suarez Upsets, Literally, Likhovtseva
by Neil E. Schlecht
Sunday, August 31, 2003
To earn the right to meet Lindsay Davenport in the US Open quarterfinals,
the Argentine Paola Suarez, best known as a doubles specialist, and Elena
Likhovtseva, the elder stateswoman of the throng of Russian women now
routinely making noise at Grand Slams, duked it out on Louis Armstrong
Stadium. Suarez pulled it out, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
Likhovtseva and Suarez traded groundstrokes, unforced errors and ultimately
sets. Most of the contest was uneventful, but it got very tight, and highly
interesting, toward the end.
Likhovtseva served for the win at 5-4, but Suarez broke to stay in it. With
Likhovtseva serving at 5-6, the game went back and forth, teetering to six
deuces, with Suarez securing four match points on her opponent's serve. She
finally snatched the victory when Likhovtseva ripped a shot down the line,
but muffed an easy backhand volley. She left the court in a hurry and a huff,
offering an obscene gesture to the crowd.
It looked as though the crafty Argentine would run away with the match, as
she racked up a quick 6-2 lead. Likhovtseva, however, leveled the contest by
snatching the second set, 6-3. In the third and deciding set, the 36th-ranked
Likhovtseva pulled ahead with an early break, but couldn't hold on to register
the upset.
Neither player had a particularly harrowing path to the round of 16, and only
Likhovtseva had been as deep as a quarter in a Grand Slam previously; she
reached that round at both Wimbledon in 2002 and the Australian Open in 2000.
For her part, Suarez has won three small singles titles and a total of 27
doubles championships, including three at Slams. However, Suarez is the higher-
ranked singles player, and she came into the match as the 24th seed at this
year's Open.
