Made two indoor finals, winning early in the season (San Jose) and losing a fifth-set tiebreaker to Marat Safin in the finals of his last tournament of the year (Paris). Finished season with 43-22 record. 1999 Finished in the top 20 for the third consecutive season, winning titles in San Jose and Super 9 in Indian Wells. Won twice in leading Australia to its first Davis Cup title since 1986. Also helped Australia to World Team Championship. In March, broke into the top 10 for the first time in his career. Advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the second consecutive year, his best Grand Slam finish of '99. Missed about two months with knee injury, finishing with a year-end No. 19 rank. 1998 Played in his first Grand Slam final when he met countryman Patrick Rafter at the U.S. Open, losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. Won in Memphis, helping him to a career-high $1.27 million in earnings and a career-best year-end ranking (No. 15). 1997 Earned victories in all three of his finals appearances (on three different surfaces), including a grasscourt win over Goran Ivanisevic for the Queen's Club title. Recorded a personal-best 142.3 mph serve at the World Team Championship. 1996 Debuted in the Top 20 after reaching the fourth round of the U.S. Open. Blasted 29 aces in a straight sets victory over Pete Sampras in the third round of the Australian Open.
