leverage for a player coming off a rookie season, in that he can take his
ball and glove and go home to Japan. And if the Dodgers try to stop that,
after paying him only $500,000 this year, they run the risk of burning the
bridge that has been bringing over talented Japanese players since Hideo
Nomo.
"I think it's warranted," Colletti said of Saito's desire for a larger salary
than a one-year player normally receives. "It's a unique situation. I can
understand, to some degree, taking the perspective he has."
