Lefty tosses six quality innings in second Oakland start

ANAHEIM -- Angels rookie Ervin Santana tied the A's in knots Thursday night,
and the result was a tie atop the American League West standings.
Santana (8-6) scattered six hits over 8 1/3 innings, leading the Halos to a
3-0 victory in the finale of a three-game series at Angel Stadium. The hosts
won the final two games of the set to pull into a first-place tie with the A's
, who scored a total of three runs in the three games.
Oakland closed out a three-city road trip at 7-3 and hosts the Yankees on
Friday at McAfee Coliseum for the opener of a three-game series.
Lefty Joe Kennedy suffered his first loss with the A's despite six solid
innings in his second start as a fill-in for injured righty Rich Harden.
Kennedy (3-1) gave up two runs on seven hits and two walks, striking out two.
Bengie Molina's two-out single in the third opened the scoring, and Robb
Quinlan made it 2-0 in favor of the Angels with a solo homer to left in the
fourth. The third run scored with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, when
Vladimir Guerrero was hit by catcher Jason Kendall's throw trying to steal
third base and scored when the ball glanced into left field.
The A's mounted two serious scoring threats. They stranded Mark Ellis -- who
doubled to open the game and took third on a sacrifice bunt -- in the first
inning, and Ellis hit into a double play with runners at the corners to end
the eighth.
