A's extend contracts of president Michael Crowley and general manager

OAKLAND -- Oakland Athletics Owner and Managing Partner Lew Wolff announced
today he has extended the contracts of team president Michael Crowley and Vice
President and General Manager Billy Beane through the 2014 season.
"Mike and Billy were my first free agent signings and both continue to
demonstrate their talents as two of the finest executives in the sports
industry today," said Wolff. "I am very pleased their relationship with the A's
will continue during one of the most exciting and important times in our team's
history."
The 2007 season marks Crowley's 10th year with the Athletics organization and
his ninth as president after being named to the position on September 28, 1998.
His tenure is the second longest among those who have served in the same
capacity since 1968. A limited partner in the Athletics ownership group,
Crowley is responsible for the overall day-to-day functioning of the Athletics'
organization both on the business and baseball sides of the operation.
The 43-year old Crowley has developed a business model whose goals and
objectives are to provide an affordable entertainment product on the field as
well as delivering the absolute highest levels of customer service to fans
attending games at the McAfee Coliseum. While Crowley stays involved with all
aspects of the organization's business affairs, including finance, sales,
marketing, public relations and community affairs, he has be at the forefront
of building an outstanding team that continues to deliver outstanding value.
He continues to play a key role in the development and implementation of Cisco
Field, the future home of the A's.
Considered one of the most progressive and talented executives in the sports in
dustry today, Beane has molded the A's into a perennial postseason contender
since taking over the general manager's duties on October 17, 1997. Under
Beane's watch, the A's have compiled 859-661 (.565) record in nine-plus seasons
, which is the third best record in the American League and fourth best in all
of baseball during that time frame. The A's have earned a spot in postseason
five times in the last seven seasons, winning four American League West titles
(2000; 2002-03; 2006) and securing one AL Wild Card spot (2001). Starting with
the 2000 season, the A's have compiled a 698-498 (.584) record, which is
the second-best record in the Majors next to the New York Yankees 710-482 (.596
) mark.
