Suzuki eager to learn from Kendall
OAKLAND -- If the A's wanted Kurt Suzuki to be the catcher of the future,
they couldn't have chosen a better person for him to learn from.
Kurt Suzuki
Oakland's No. 1 catcher is Jason Kendall, who is regarded in the A's
clubhouse as one of the most important players on the roster, regardless of
his batting average.
The A's pitchers never have to shake Kendall off and he seems to know what
they want to throw before even they do.
Kendall
Suzuki is trying to become like that.
Suzuki
Suzuki went 2-for-4 at the plate in his first career start last Saturday
against St. Louis, but he wasn't overly concerned with that.
Suzuki
"I didn't care how I did at the plate," Suzuki said. "I just cared about how
I did defensively, calling the game and working with the pitching staff.
"It's a lot different, there's a lot more detail with just trying to get
ready," Suzuki said of the difference between the bigs and Triple-A. "It's a
lot more in depth."
That sounds a lot like Kendall, who hasn't hesitated to help Suzuki.
"It's a good thing," Suzuki said of being Kendall's understudy. "It's a
situation where when I get a chance to ask a question, I ask him and he's
always willing to help. I'm very thankful for that."
So far, it appears that Suzuki is passing the test. He is 4-for-9 at the
plate, but, more importantly, A's manager Bob Geren likes what he sees.
"He's the guy that doesn't get to play video games or watch movies on the
plane," Geren said. "I told him that you need to do the best you can to learn
the league and learn the hitters in the league and he has taken that
seriously.
"He's been good every time I put him back there. He got put into a couple of
high-pressure situations when he first came up and he did fine."
Bob Geren
Suzuki's first taste of a Major League game came on June 12 in Houston when
the A's lost to the Astros 5-4.
Suzuki came into that game as a pinch-hitter and remained behind the plate.
He made a play that temporarily saved the game in the 10th when the Astros
had the bases loaded and Morgan Ensberg hit a dribbler in front of the plate.
Suzuki showed quick reflexes and pounced on the ball, fired a strike to first
and nipped Ensberg by half a step.
"He has shown pretty good quickness behind the plate and his hands have been
good," Geren said. "He's shown pretty good plate discipline, too. He's going
to be a pretty good catcher."
The A's beat the Astros, 6-5, in 11 innings two nights later, and Suzuki had
a single during the 11th-inning rally.
How long he remains in Oakland this season seems to be up in the air right
now, because when it comes to having catchers, the A's certainly run the
gamut.
Suzuki
Currently on the roster, they have the well-respected veteran leader in the
33-year-old Kendall and the 23-year-old rookie in Suzuki. Also, on the
horizon, is the return of 38-year-old Mike Piazza.
Piazza, who was told in Spring Training he was just going to DH, was set to
make a rehab assignment this week as he returns from a shoulder injury, but
that plan was put on hold.
Piazza
Piazza was told his rehab would start when his shoulder felt good enough to
throw, because he was being brought back to DH and to serve as a backup
catcher. What that means exactly, nobody really knows at this point.
Piazza
"Whatever they decide to do, they'll do it for a reason," Suzuki said. "What
ever it leads to, it leads to."
Suzuki
If Piazza comes back and the A's use him as the full-time backup to Kendall,
Suzuki might end up back at Triple-A Sacramento. Piazza may not catch much at
all, and Suzuki could stay. All of this is very much up in the air, but the
simple fact is that Suzuki is with the A's right now.
"I can't really think about that kind of thing," Suzuki said. "Obviously I'm
here right now and I'm ready to be here. I can only control my play on the
field. I am just taking it day by day."
Suzuki
In Tuesday's game, Suzuki showed what he is capable of with the bat, hitting
his first career home run. He hit a 1-1 pitch from Todd Coffey into the
left-field seats during the eighth inning.
"It was nice, hitting a home run," Suzuki said. "My main goal when I'm
catching is to win the game and win the game defensively."
Suzuki
Suzuki was a second-round round pick in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft out
of Cal State Fullerton. He hit .392 in college as a freshman, .350 as a
sophomore and .413 with 16 homers as a junior.
Suzuki
He hit well through the Minor Leagues as well, hitting .297 at Class A short
season in Vancouver after being drafted. He hit .277 with the Advanced A team
in Stockton in 2005, then hit .285 with Double-A Midland in 2006. He was
hitting .280 at Triple-A Sacramento before being called up to Oakland on June
9.
