11 #334 Chris Berroa OF
A pattern for the A's may be emerging early in Day Two. The team takes its
third straight player not from a four-year school in Christopher Berroa, a JC
outfielder from Chipola JC, in the 11th round. Berroa, a New York City native,
hit .389 with three homers and 18 stolen bases this season, his first at the
junior college.
More on Berroa. He was a UNC-Greensboro recruit who didn't wind-up at the
school, but the connection is interesting. The A's have done well with UNC-G
in recent years, taking Jermaine Mitchell and Patrick Currin in 2006. Berroa
was a top-25 prospect in the Northeast coming out of high school, according to
Perfect Game USA. Berroa was a 25th round pick of Washington in 2007, and he
has a good throwing arm along with above-average speed and a body that should
develop power as he gets older.
12 #364 Zac Elgie 1B
Elgie, a Kansas University recruit, is arguably the best power prospect to come
out of North Dakota in a long time. He can play both first base and right-field
and he hit 34 homeruns for the Minot, ND, summer American League team last year
and 61 in his three-year career. He also is a three-sport star, playing
basketball and quarterbacking the football team in Minot. Elgie is the first
player drafted from North Dakota since 1992 (Darin Erstad).
13 #394 Daniel Thomas RHP
Thomas, a Tampa, Florida, native, is a senior draft pick, the first one for
Oakland so far this season. He was a 44th round selection of the St. Louis
Cardinals last year after his junior season with the Bulls. Thomas had a 2-4
record and a 4.21 ERA in 57.2 innings for the Bulls this season. He struck-out
55 in 57.2 innings. Thomas has a strong right-arm with good velocity. His best
pitch is a power sinker, a pitch that the A's have been seeing more and more in
their system of late.
BA:
18. Daniel Thomas, rhp, South Florida (National Rank: 193)
As a redshirt sophomore, Thomas was the Bulls' Saturday starter in 2007 and was
drafted by the Cardinals in the 44th round. He returned to school to take on
the Friday night ace role this season. Even though his statistics aren't gaudy,
Thomas has boosted his draft stock. Typically pitching at 90-93 mph, he
continues to improve his arm strength and has been seen up to 95. He also throws
a true downer curveball and has excellent feel for his above-average changeup.
With clean mechanics and a high three-quarters arm slot, Thomas pitches
downhill with plane but little deception. He had Tommy John surgery as a senior
in high school in 2004, then felt discomfort in his arm again last season and
was shut down after just 28 innings—though he did not require surgery. Thomas
is a projectable 6-foot-2, 195 pounds and could add velocity to his fastball.
He will get a chance to start at the pro level but could end up in the bullpen.
14 #424 David Thomas OF
In the 14th round, the A's took Catawba College senior David Thomas, a
centerfielder. A first-team All-South Atlantic Conference Player and Player of
the Year, Thomas hit .442 with 15 homers and 44 RBIs in 2008. He is a
switch-hitter from Winston-Salem, NC. The A's have done very well selecting
players with connections to the states of North and South Carolina in recent
years.
15 #454 Nino Leyja SS
In the 15th round, Oakland selected Houston high school shortstop Nino Leyja.
He is a recruit of Sam Houston State University. A 5'11'', 170 pounder, Leyja
stole 31 bases in 2008 and he can play all over the infield and outfield.
16 #484 Matt Fitts RHP
In the 16th round, the A's have taken Lewis-Clark State College righty Matthew
Fitts. Lewis-Clark State is the alma mater of A's set-up man Keith Foulke. It
is an NAIA program, but it has a reputation for producing good professional
pitchers. For his career, Fitts was 23-1 with six complete games and a 2.63 ERA
in 168 innings. He struck-out 184 and walked 50 in his two seasons at Lewis-
Clark State. His team went 58-6 in 2008 and was the NAIA national champion.
A draft-eligible sophomore last season, Fitts was selected in the 15th round by
Houston but didn't sign. He is a Bay Area native (Cardinal Newman HS) and
throws his fastball in the low-90s with a good slider and a change-up. Fitts
was expected to go in the top-six rounds, so he could be a value pick for the
A's in the 16th round.
BA:
BA:16) Matt Fitts: As an eligible sophomore, Fitts didn't sign last year as
the Astros' 15th-round pick, returning to Lewis-Clark State to help the
Warriors try to win yet another NAIA national championship. He has won all 11
of his decisions and won the super-regional clincher for the Warriors. A high
school teammate of UC Davis closer Justin Fitzgerald, and yet another Northern
California prep product who figures to go high out of college this year, Fitts
profiles as a back of the rotation starter. A Long Beach State transfer, Fitts
has athleticism in his compact 6-foot-2 frame that allows him to throw quality
strikes with three average pitches. His fastball is unremarkable but sits in
the 91-92 mph range deep into pitch counts. He's not afraid to pitch inside,
with 22 HBPs in just 14 starts. His slider is a swing-and-miss pitch at the
college level and could use a bit more depth for pro ball to be a strikeout
pitch. His changeup gives him a solid third offering. Fitts can be a bit home
run prone and won't be an ace but should move quickly.
17 #514 Bradley Glenn 3B
Glenn will be taking on A's first-round pick Jemile Weeks in today's NCAA
tournament game between Arizona and Miami. Glenn is a versatile player who has
handled the corner infield and the outfield for the Wildcats this season. He
hit .303 with 14 homers and 53 RBIs in 2008. Glenn is a native of Oklahoma who
hit .333 as a sophomore with UA.
18 #544 Rayan Gonzalez RHP
Gonzalez was considered one of the top prep arms from Puerto Rico going into
this season, but he saw a drop in velocity recently that scared away a number
of teams. He is committed to Bethune-Cookman college. He is the first player
from Puerto Rico drafted by the A's this season. He struggled at a recent
Puerto Rican prospect showcase, but was the ace of the Puerto Rico junior
national team this season.
19 #574 Michael Hart RHP
In the 19th round, the A's selected Texas State right-hander Michael Hart.
Texas State is the alma mater of Midland starter Scott Moore. A native of
Staten Island, Hart led his team with a 3.88 ERA in 102 innings this season.
He had a 7-3 record, four complete games and 89 strike-outs.
20 #604 Rodney Rutherford 3B
Rutherford was a two-way player in college, but the A's announced him as a
position player. He had Tommy John surgery in 2006. Rutherford hit .373 with 26
homers and 89 RBIs for Columbus State this year. On the mound, he appeared in
only two games, allowing two earned runs in 1.2 innings.
