Justin Duchscherer's agent, Damon Lapa, tells me that Duchscherer threw a
45-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday and he is scheduled for a rehab start -
tentatively - on Sunday at Triple-A Sacramento.
Lapa did not say in his e-mail why Duchscherer was scratched from his start a
week ago, and the A's have not provided any details.
When asked about Duchscherer before tonight's game at Kansas City, manager
Bob Geren said he had no update. Considering that Geren was watching some of
Duchscherer's previous bullpen sessions via web cam, however, it's hard to
imagine that he wasn't aware of Duchscherer's throwing session on Wednesday.
The A's are always concerned about medical privacy laws, but managers and GMs
are allowed to provide medical information if it pertains to baseball
activity, and the team has said only that Duchscherer was sidelined by a
"non-baseball issue."
My guess is that Geren wants to make sure he's cleared to give information
about Duchscherer before he does so, but still....he threw a bullpen session
two days ago. And Geren has been asked about Duchscherer every single day.
It's just kind of odd.
The main thing though is that Duchscherer appears to be OK. There are sure to
be lots of scouts at his appearance Sunday; some contenders looking for
pitching have their eye on the two-time All-Star as a possible pickup because
Duchscherer will be a free agent after the season and the A's are focused on
their young starters.
