A's win but likely lose Inge for season
The bad news from Oakland’s 7-1 victory over Boston: Brandon Inge left after
re-injuring his right shoulder – and based on what he told me before the game,
that might be an end to his season, at least in terms of playing third. He
can’t throw with an unstable shoulder. If it keeps popping out of place, he
said, he will need surgery to anchor it, as he has had done on his left
shoulder.
UPDATE: That’s exactly what has happened: Inge said he will have surgery in a
week, ending his season. Recovery time is six months. He hopes to maybe pinch
hit in the interim, and he asked about the possibility of delaying surgery and
DH-ing and pinch-hitting, but he said he realizes his value is primarily as a
defensive player. Manager Bob Melvin also noted after the game that the A’s
are happy with DHs Jonny Gomes and Seth Smith, so it sounds as if there just
weren’t enough potential at-bats to keep Inge from having surgery earlier,
which will help him in terms of finding another job for next year. He told me
before the game he would love to come back to the A’s in a super-utility role
if Melvin wants him. “I’d do anything for him,” he said.
Inge hurt the shoulder on a throw in the top of the third inning – and he

remained in to hit (remember, it’s only a problem when he throws) and he
blasted a two-run double that hit Cody Ross’ glove and then the wall in right.

Even if Inge’s season is essentially done, he did some amazing things in
contributing to Oakland’s success, including 52 RBIs in 74 games.
“My damn shoulder came out again,” said Inge, who felt the shoulder pop out
of place in Chicago on Aug. 11 and came off the DL on Saturday. “I gave it my
best shot. I knew it was going to be rough coming into it.”
Inge said that he probably didn’t tell the team how much pain he was in. But
with the A’s in contention, Inge wanted to try everything he could to come
back and contribute.
“In a year like this, you don’t leave anything on the table,” he said. “I
literally gave everything I had to offer to this team. And I’m at peace with
it.”
He came out of the game before the A’s took the field for the fourth.
“Before that at-bat, he knew he was coming out of the game,” Melvin said.
“To come up and double, knowing it’s your last at-bat in a while, is big.
To put together that kind of at-bat is pretty cool.”
“That shows you how tough he is, what he’s willing to do for the team,”
Oakland shortstop Brandon Hicks said.
