A's success reflected in 11 GIBBY nominations
By Jane Lee / MLB.com | 11/08/12 3:34 PM ET
OAKLAND -- Awards season has been kind to the A's, who have reeled in several
nominations for more honors.
Oakland is represented in 11 of the annual Greatness in Baseball Yearly (GIBBY)
Awards' 21 categories.
Major League Baseball's A-listers will take home 2012 GIBBYs trophies -- the
ultimate honors of the sport's awards season -- based on votes by media, front-
office personnel, MLB alumni, fans at MLB.com and the Society for American
Baseball Research.
Individual honors will go to the MLB MVP, in addition to the year's best
starting pitcher, hitter, closer, setup man, rookie, breakout hitter, breakout
pitcher, comeback player, defensive player, manager, executive and postseason
performer.
GIBBY trophies also will be awarded for the year's top play, storyline, hitting
performance, pitching performance, oddity, walk-off, Cut4 topic and postseason
moment, from MLB.com's Must C highlight reels.
Yoenis Cespedes, Jarrod Parker and Ryan Cook are among the finalists for top
rookie, with the right-handed Cook also up for Setup Man of the Year.
Josh Reddick, who already took home his first Gold Glove Award this year, is
nominated for Breakout Hitter. Fellow outfielder Coco Crisp has received a
nomination in the Top Play category for his over-the-wall catch of Prince
Fielder's potential home run ball in Game 3 of the American League Division
Series.
Crisp ignited another dose of playoff magic with his walk-off single in Game 4,
earning him a nomination for Postseason Moment. It was Oakland's 14th walk-off
hit of the year, and for this reason, the A's, as a team, are up for Walk-off
of the Year, and their incredible 94-win season is up for Storyline of the Year.
Fittingly, Bob Melvin is among the nominees for Manager of the Year, with
general manager Billy Beane being considered for top executive.
Third baseman Brandon Inge has landed in the Hitting Performance category for
his go-ahead RBI hit in Chicago after dislocating his shoulder in the previous
inning.
Even "Weekend at Bernie's," which fueled a music video featuring several A's
players, has found its own category, getting the nomination for Top Oddity.
In the past four years, you the fans have cast more than 40 million votes
across the various GIBBYs categories, none of which were restricted to
individual League affiliation.
You can vote as many times as you want until fan balloting closes Sunday, Dec.
2, at 9:59 p.m. PT.
Winners will be presented their GIBBY trophies at the MLB.com Greatness in
Baseball Yearly Awards extravaganza during the Winter Meetings in Nashville,
Tenn., on Tuesday, Dec. 4.
