30.Wahl had an impressive sophomore season as a starter at Ole Miss then had
a successful turn pitching in relief for Team USA over the summer. He
returned as Ole Miss' Friday starter and continued to use his power
repertoire successfully. He has a good pitcher's body and plenty of arm
strength, cranking his fastball up to 95 mph with good life to it. He couples
that with an average to sometimes plus curve, more than enough for the
bullpen. Throw in a feel for the changeup and any team that takes him should
probably send him out as a starter when he enters the pro game. The only
thing that could hold Wahl back is his command and control and any team
taking Wahl can take comfort in knowing he does just fine in short relief.
But that might just be a backup plan because many think he'll be just fine to
start.

Bobby Wahl may be somewhat of the forgotten man in this year’s college
pitching crop. He doesn’t have quite the name recognition of a Mark Appel or
Sean Manaea, and his fastball is just shy of Jonathon Crawford’s blistering
97-98 mph heat. But, perhaps it’s about time that changed. Wahl’s
pitchability stacks up with any pitcher in the class, and he has the raw
stuff to stack up with almost anyone in the class, including a fastball that
reaches 96 mph. On top of that, he has the quality track record that’s very
difficult to punch any holes in.
Like many elite arms at top quality college programs, Wahl has been on the
scouting scene for quite some time. Before even arriving at Ole Miss, Wahl
was a sought-after high school arm. Back then he was a long, projectable
right-handed arm that pitched at 88-93 mph with his fastball. The thought
amongst most scouts is that while he could turn pro right away, he also could
benefit greatly from three years of pitching in the SEC. He ended up being
selected in the 39th round by the Cleveland Indians in the 2010 MLB Draft,
and from that point forward it was clear that he would indeed end up pitching
for the Rebels.
There were some growing pains in the early going for Wahl at Ole Miss, as he
posted a 4.80 ERA in his freshman season. The signs were good, however, as
most of Wahl’s peripherals were decent, and it was simply a question of
tightening up his command for his sophomore campaign. All but one of his
appearances came out of the bullpen.
Flash forward to 2012 and Wahl had become a full fledged college starter, and
a dominant one at that. He posted a 7-4 record with a 2.55 ERA over 17 starts.
More impressive however, were his 104 strikeouts and just 76 hits allowed in
99 innings of work. Wahl did walk 32 hitters in that span, and while there’s
nothing wrong with that, he is capable of a better rate. But, it was at this
point that the 6-foot-3, 200 pound right-hander put himself squarely on the
radar as a potential first round pick in the 2013 draft.
Coming off that superb spring, Wahl found himself pitching for Team USA last
summer. It was there that he put himself right in the mix as one of the best
handful of college arms in the nation.
To start with, Wahl obviously has the body type. He’s long limbed, athletic,
and still has a little bit of projection for scouts to dream on. The delivery
is simple, repeatable, and his arm action is long and loose. His ability to
throw strikes and the ease in which he operates are also big pluses. These
are all checked boxes for scouts before we even get to raw stuff. And, it
just so happens that Wahl’s raw stuff stacks up exceptionally well.
Wahl pitched at 93-96 mph for Team USA, showing exceptional fastball command
from an easy, downhill delivery. His fastball was absolutely leaping on
hitters up in the zone, and he was inducing a large number of swings and
misses. Any time you see a pitcher able to pitch aggressively with his
fastball and still miss bats, you have an arm to watch very closely. In
longer stints, Wahl will likely pitch closer to 91-94 mph, but clearly he has
a better than average fastball.
The slider, however, is going to be Wahl’s go-to out pitch at the
professional level. Thrown at 82-84 mph, it was a dominant offering for him
with Team USA, showing sharp two-plane break. He’s learned to spot it well,
but has to be careful about getting a little too aggressive with it in the
strike zone. If there’s a mistake he makes right now, it’s making too good
of a hitter’s pitch when a count is in his favor.
Wahl’s changeup gives him a very well rounded, three pitch arsenal. It may
not be a plus offering like his fastball and slider, but it looks like it
will be a high quality offering at the professional level. Thrown around
80-81 mph, it shows diving action and it’s becoming more and more of a swing
and miss type weapon for him.
Bobby Wahl is going to be delivered to professional baseball as a very
finished product. He comes with three well developed pitches he can throw for
strikes, a clean delivery, and a very solid feel for pitching. There are some
mild inconsistencies in the finish to his delivery, but aside from that
professional coaches aren’t going to have to worry too much about tweaking
this right-hander. And, if he can build on his sophomore campaign, Wahl
should find himself comfortably in the top twenty picks and quite possibly a
top ten overall selection.

39. BOBBY WAHL, rhp, University of Mississippi
Wahl has thrived as a Friday starter at Ole Miss the last two years,
especially this season with his 8-0, 1.22 record through his first 10 starts,
but the 6-foot-4, 210-pound righthander’s true calling appears to be at the
back end of the bullpen. He thrived in that role the last two summers—first
in the Cape Cod League, and last year with USA Baseball’s college national
team—when his fastball peaked at 97 mph, and scouts say his bulldog demeanor
and power approach to pitching are best suited for a short role at the next
level. Even though relief pitching appears to be in his future, Wahl made a
seamless transition to a starting job for the Rebels, going 7-4, 2.55 with
104 strikeouts in 99 innings as a sophomore, and he has largely duplicated
that success this spring, even though his command has wavered at times and he
always seemed to be pitching out of trouble. As a starter, his velocity
backed off to 90-93 mph and only occasionally reached the mid-90s, but he has
learned to become a more complete pitcher than just a hard thrower as his
82-84 mph curve has developed into a true out-pitch and he developed a
changeup this season to more effectively counteract lefthanded hitters. He
walked 32 and struck out only 56 in his first 67 innings this season, but
continued adjustments to his delivery should improve his location and the
consistency of his stuff.
