Lester goes to A's for Cespedes in swap of stars The Red Sox and A's pulled off a blockbluster deal Thursday morning to swap All-Stars, Boston sending ace left-hander Jon Lester to Oakland for outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. Outfielder Jonny Gomes returns to the A's in the trade. The Red Sox will also be sending cash to Oakland, while Boston will receive Oakland's second pick in the competitive balance compensation B round in next year's Draft. Neither club has announced the trade. After already acquiring Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel from the Cubs this summer, the A's continue to bolster their pitching staff and position themselves for a playoff run with the acquisition of Lester, a 10-game winner already this year and a three-time All-Star. He is eligible to be a free agent at the end of the season. In exchange, the Red Sox land an elite power hitter in Cespedes -- the two-time defending Home Run Derby champ who, at 28, has hit 23-plus homers in each of his first two full seasons and has already belted 17 this year. He was an All-Star for the first time this season. Gomes, 33, has been with Boston since last season after spending 2012 with the A's. The 28-year-old Cespedes, who defected from Cuba and signed a four-year contract with the A's in February 2012, can be a free agent after next season if he doesn't agree to an extension.
