4th rd #132 Jordan Schwartz Niagara (NY) RHP R/R JR 6'02" 195lbs DOB: 02/28/92 BA National Rank:376 Signed for/Slot money: 0.175M/0.385M mlb.com: "You're talking about a guy that was an all-state football player in high school; he's a two-way player [at Niagara] -- the athleticism is something that stuck out to us," A's assistant director of scouting Michael Holmes said. "Not only that, but the ability to throw 90 to 94 [mph], we like the upside with his arm, we like the upside with the athleticism. We think there's a tremendous amount of projection in his future." Fillmyer will throw his fastball in the low to mid 90s, sometimes touching 97, with occasional tailing action. His curveball has good 12-6 break and has the potential to be a swing and miss pitch in the future. Fillmyer doesn’t really throw a changeup much at this point and does struggle with command, so many see him as strictly a reliever. Some do believe, however, that if his curveball keeps developing and he is able to improve his command, he could be a solid back end of the bullpen type. The A's continued their trend of taking college right-handers in the First-Year Player Draft, selecting Heath Fillmyer from Mercer County Community College in New Jersey with their fifth-round pick Friday. Fillmyer was drafted by the Rockies in the 28th round in 2013 after throwing just 7 1/3 innings as a freshman. But he opted to stay in school another year and was dominant as a sophomore, going 9-0 with a 0.68 ERA while allowing just 38 hits in 66 innings. He fanned 94 batters, good for a 12.82 K/9 ratio, and was named the National Junior College Athletic Association Player of the Year on Thursday. After playing shortstop almost all of his freshman year, Fillmyer decided to devote his full attention to the mound."It was relatively simple," he said Friday. "I got drafted throwing 7 1/3 innings. What's going to happen if I devote my life to this?"The Draft concludes Saturday, with exclusive coverage of Rounds 11-40 beginning on MLB.com at 10 a.m. PT.Fillmyer sits in the low to mid 90s with a fastball that can reach 97 mph, and he features a strong curveball with a 12-6 break.Despite being relatively new to pitching, Fillmyer has done his best to soak up as much information as possible on the craft."I pick up a lot of stuff that the professionals do, I listen a lot, and when I'm not at the gym or at school, I'm learning stuff," he said. "I watch a lot of YouTube videos on mechanics."One of my favorite pitchers to watch is Pedro Martinez," he added. "I watch a lot of his mechanics and his velocity, and just his power from his legs. I try to replicate that myself. Obviously I'm nowhere close to the pitcher he is, but I definitely just try to pick up little things." BA:http://album.blog.yam.com/thomashsnu perfectgame:http://album.blog.yam.com/thomashsnu KL:http://m.espn.go.com/mlb/draftplayer?playerId=19555&wjb Few prospects have seen their stock increase as much as Fillmyer's has this year, as the Rockies' 2013 28th-round pick has taken to full-time pitching better than anyone could have expected. His arm is very quick, and he'll touch 96 mph with his fastball, sitting 90-93 with arm-side run on the offering. He also features a hard curve that has quality bite when it's working, although at times it can get a bit slurvy and it will hang in the zone. His change is still very much a work in progress and he doesn't throw it often, though there's no discernable difference in arm speed so it has a chance to be an average offering in time. His delivery is outstanding for someone new to pitching, and he repeats it very well with a clean, high three-quarter arm slot.Because he's on the smaller side and the third pitch isn't where it needs to be there's a chance that Fillmyer ends up in the bullpen, but if a team is patient with his right arm he could develop into a quality starter, with high-leverage reliever as a potential floor if teams are scared of the durability or if the change doesn't develop. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/profile.asp?P=heath-fillmyer age W L ERA G GS IP H R ER HR BB SO 2014Mercer County CC 20 9 0 0.68 10 10 66 38 7 5 0 25 94 http://stats.njcaa.org/sports/bsb/2013-14/div2/players/heathfillmyerscko?view=splits ---------- 6th rd #192 Trace Loehr Rex Putnam HS (OR) SS L/R HS 5'10" 175lbs DOB: 05/23/95 Commitment: Oregon State BA National Rank:81 Signed for/Slot money: 0.6M/0.2159M mlb.com: http://m.mlb.com/video/v33268933/draft-report-trace-loehr-hs-shortstop Scouting Grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 40 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45 Left-handed-hitting middle infielders are always a hot commodity, and Loehr seemed to be cementing his place in the top three rounds as the Draft approached.Oregon State always does a good job of recruiting in its own backyard, finding solid, hard-nosed players to commit. Loehr definitely fits that description, getting very high marks for his intensity and hustle. He has some outstanding tools to go along with his plus makeup, especially his above- average bat that sprays line drives all over the field. Loehr has excellent speed, which helps him as a basestealing threat and in covering ground on the infield. He has the instincts, range and hands to play shortstop with an average arm, though some think he might be best suited for second base. There is little question, however, that Loehr can stay up the middle and develop into an exciting top-of-the-order table-setter in the future. BA:http://album.blog.yam.com/thomashsnu perfectgame:http://album.blog.yam.com/thomashsnu KL:http://m.espn.go.com/mlb/draftplayer?playerId=19525&wjb Loehr doesn't have one standout tool, but can do a little bit of everything on the baseball field and might be able to stick at shortstop. His stance is a little awkward with a closed shoulder to start, but he gets to the ball quickly and hits it hard to the pull side. There's little chance of power with his frame and his swing is very linear, and he'll need to make some refinements to his swing if he's going to be able to hit the ball with any kind of authority to the part of the field. While Loehr doesn't have a strong arm, he has a chance to play shortstop at the next level because of his athleticism and quick release. If he was forced to move across the bag, the bat doesn't play as well, but he could still be a regular if he can show an ability to put the ball into gaps and go the other way. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/profile.asp?P=trace-loehr age AB H 2B 3B HR SB CS BB SO avg obp slg 2014 Varsity 18 56 22 8 6 1 21 - 19 8 .393 .562 .803 http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/trace-loehr/OnAPdvTxEeKZ5AAmVebBJg/gendersport/baseball-stats.htm ---------- 7th rd #222 Branden Cogswell Virginia (VA) SS L/R JR 6'01" 180lbs DOB: 01/12/93 BA National Rank:228 Signed for/Slot money: 0.2M/0.1642M mlb.com: The A's drafted middle infielder Branden Cogswell on Friday with their seventh pick of the First-Year Player Draft.Cogswell, a left-handed hitter, is in his junior season at the University of Virginia, where he moved from shortstop to second base early this spring. He is the first University of Virginia product to be drafted by the A's since current closer Sean Doolittle, who was taken in the supplemental first round of the 2007 Draft. The Draft concludes Saturday, with exclusive coverage of Rounds 11-40 beginning on MLB.com at 10 a.m. PT.Cogswell has hit .294 with a .394 on-base percentage out of the leadoff spot for the Cavaliers this season, making just three errors in 285 chances. Kelliher has a loose, live arm and will throw his fastball up to 94 mph with good downhill plane, especially for his size. His curveball has hard, tight 12-to-6 action and has the chance to be a swing and miss pitch at the next level. Kelliher’s changeup is deceptive and has decent fade to it, and it also has the chance to be a quality offering with some development.
