Tyler Clippard +1M <--> RHP Casey Meisner
Beane:"We were very happy to get Casey," Beane said. "[He's] a guy that we
think is going to be a starter all the way through and a guy we liked out of
the Draft."One of our focuses here, even as it relates to the Kazmir deal and
this deal, was really focusing on some guys that are maybe a little farther
away but maybe had a little more upside, which is not necessarily how we've
approached things in the more recent past."

ATHLETICS ACQUIRE
Casey Meisner, rhp
Age: 20
The 6-foot-7 Meisner’s tall, lanky frame and feel for the strike zone made him
a target for the Mets in the 2013 draft, despite regular velocity readings in
the high 80s as a Cypress Woods High senior. They invested a third-round pick
and $500,000 to sign him. Since entering pro ball, the velocity readings have
increased and this year he was sitting 92-94 mph with his fastball, with which
he does a good job of throwing strikes. Meisner works downhill with good plane,
as you’d expect of a man his size, and has a solid-average curveball and some
feel for the changeup. Meisner has a competitive bent and scouts have made
comparisons to a young Brandon McCarthy with a No. 4 starter profile.

Mets give up too much to get Tyler Clippard
“The New York Mets are “going for it,” if by going for it we mean acquiring
fringe pieces and, at least in the deal for Tyler Clippard, now surrendering
legitimate top-10 prospects. Sandy Alderson just dubbed Mets fans the
“citizens of Panic City,” but with this move he has just declared himself
mayor. The difference between Clippard, who posted a 3.89 FIP so far this year and a
2.79 ERA in pitcher-friendly Oakland, and even a replacement-level reliever
over the course of 20 innings is about three runs allowed.”
He recently ranked the Mets with the fourth best farm system in baseball, so on
some of the lower ranked systems he could have easily been a top three or four
prospect.
"Casey Meisner was my sleeper pitching prospect for the Mets this year, and has
indeed had a breakout season in Savannah. He would now rank sixth in the Mets'
system, behind Dominic Smith (who ranked No. 40 on my last updated global
prospect ranking), Amed Rosario, Gavin Cecchini, Michael Fulmer and Wuilmer
Becerra (although you could argue Meisner belongs ahead of Becerra too). The
6-foot-8 right-hander is consistently throwing heat up to 94 mph, complemented
with an above-average curveball, and this year has seen his command jump to
where it's consistently above-average as well. He pitched extremely well in
Savannah and has been so-so in High-A St. Lucie, with his most recent outing
his worst of the year.
“Meisner has real, tangible trade value, as teams are always looking for
young, high-upside pitching. If healthy, at worst he could be a Chris Young
type with a better breaking ball, and at best he could become a No. 2 starter
as he still has a lot of room for growth — both physical and mental.”
