Robinson has more projectability than most college juniors because he carries
just 210 pounds on his 6-foot-6 frame and won't turn 21 until the day after
the Draft concludes. He made the U.S. collegiate national team last summer
and cracked Texas Tech's weekend rotation for the first time this spring. He
had a stretch of five quality starts in six outings at midseason but
struggled down the stretch as the Red Raiders failed to make the NCAA
postseason.
Robinson relies heavily on his low-80s changeup to survive, and hitters can't
stop chasing it when it fades out of the strike zone. His fastball ranges
from 91-95 mph with more downhill plane than life, and it's more effective in
yielding grounders than swings-and-misses. His mid-80s slider and mid-70s
curveball both lack consistency, with the former more effective.
The key for Robinson will be to get stronger, which should add more power to
his pitches and enable him to find the strike zone more regularly. There are
some similarities between him and Michael Wacha at the same stages of their
careers, though Wacha was more dominant and threw a lot more strikes in
college at Texas A&M. If his stuff and control don't improve, Robinson will
profile more as a middle reliever.

Texas A&M has imported transfer shortstops from the West Coast in each of the
last three seasons, with Camarillo (Cal State Northridge) following behind
Kole Kaler (Hawaii) and Hunter Haas (Arizona State). Camarillo is the most
skilled defender of the trio and ranks among the best college shortstops in
this Draft. His glovework was a big reason why the Aggies ranked fourth in
NCAA Division I in ERA (3.86) en route to a runner-up finish at the College
World Series.
Camarillo has smooth actions at shortstop and there's no question that he can
remain at the position as a pro. He covers plenty of ground to both sides and
has reliable hands. He gets the most out of his solid arm strength thanks to
his accuracy and finely tuned internal clock, and he's capable of making
throws from any angle.
While Camarillo's defense is beyond reproach, there are concerns that he may
not provide enough offense to profile as a regular. He doesn't hit the ball
hard from the right side of the plate and strikes out too much for a player
with only minimal pull power. He has average speed and the instincts to steal
an occasional base.

Westlake High School near Thousand Oaks, Calif., has produced some pretty big
bats in the past, most notably catcher Mike Lieberthal and outfielder
Christian Yelich. The school has had just one pitcher come from its hallowed
halls and reach the big leagues, John Snyder, a 1992 draftee who spent time
in the Majors with the White Sox and Brewers. Volantis hopes to join Snyder
on that very short list, though he’s more about projection than anything
else at this point.
The first two things that jump out for Volantis is that he’s 6-foot-6 and he
’s left-handed. He’s mostly ceiling rather than now stuff, though there are
some solid starting ingredients. The fastball has started to tick up a bit
this spring and has been seen up to 94 mph with some running life. He’s more
consistently in the 89-91 mph range, though, and he sometimes struggles
commanding his fastball coming from a high slot that wanders a little. His
go-to pitch is his curve, which could be a plus offering in time. He throws
it 76-80 mph with 1-to-7 shape, and he can land it in the zone and miss bats
with it. He does have a changeup he’ll fold in every once in a while, and it
could get to average in the future.
If Volantis can continue to add strength to his large frame, he could add
some more power to both the fastball and the breaking ball, and the changeup
will come if he can keep to his arm slot and throw it more frequently. The
team that likes his feel for spin and can dream on the fastball getting
bigger could take a chance on the upside in the top five rounds and sign him
away from his Southern California commitment.
