Yeah, that Chien-Ming Wang is DEFINITELY not an ace. Nope. Definitely not a No. 1 guy who can match up with the game’s best starters and come out on top more often than not.
Nope. No way. Hell, even catcher Jorge Posada said during the off-season that the Yankees should have made the Johan Santana trade because “we need a No. 1.”
Nope. Despite a major-league leading 38 wins in 2006 and 2007 and only 13 losses, he can’t get any respect. Not even from his own teammates.
I beg to differ. He isn’t a flashy strikeout pitcher or a talkative, attention-grabbing personality. He is just a groundball machine who gets deep in games and consistently and wins more often than just about every other starter in the game.
An ace? I think so. Go ahead and name 10 starters in the major leagues who are CLEARLY better than Wang right now. And if you really want to go to the trouble, back up your argument with the numbers to prove it.
I doubt you’ll be able to do that, conclusively. So, how do you make the argument that a guy who is undoubtedly one of the game’s 10 best starters is NOT an ace? I don’t think you can.
Wang (2-0) won again Sunday, throwing 6.1 shutout innings in a 2-0 victory over Tampa Bay. By the way, his opponent Sunday was James Shields — the best starter the Rays have.
Oh, and his other victory this season? A 3-2 win over Toronto ace Roy Halladay, one of the game’s best pitchers, in which he pitched 7 excellent innings.
He can’t win big playoff games, the Wang bashers say. And yes, Wang was awful in the playoffs last season posting a 19.06 ERA in two brutal starts. Yes, he is 0-3 with a 7.58 ERA in three playoff starts.
Wang was awful in last season’s playoffs. But, look a little closer at his 2005 and 2006 performances. As a rookie in 2005, he pitched 6.2 innngs in a loss to Anaheim, allowing just one run. In 2006, against Detroit, he again pitched 6.2 innings, this time allowing three runs. So, one of those outings was dominant, the other pretty good.
He was bad last season, but don’t tell me he can’t pitch in the playoffs. He has shown that he can.
So, go right ahead and keep thinking Wang isn’t an ace. Some Yankee fans — and even players like Posada — might agree. I don’t care, and I don’t think Wang does either.
He is just going to keep pounding hitters with that sinker and, most importantly, winning games. Isn’t that what an ace does?
