Chicago's Nick Swisher swung at a pitch from
Chien-Ming Wang in the second inning on Tuesday and the bat never made it.
Swisher's bat broke at the handle and flew off to the side. It was one of
the rare times that a bat broke without hitting the ball. Swisher was left
standing at the plate with a confused expression, having struck out.
"I was trying to hit with the knob," he said. "I couldn't believe it
happened. ... I wish I had a great answer to give you how it happened.
I have been working out. I'm on the Steve Garvey program."
Swisher believes the bat must have had a small crack in it, perhaps when
he fouled off a pitch earlier in the at-bat.
"I've never seen anything like that," Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon said.
