"I have no need to see him," he said. It was widely reported in Italy today that the national Coach had decided to bury the hatchet with the Roma full-back in light of the Azzurri’s need for a reliable right-back. However, Lippi denied unequivocally any intention on his part to hold clear-the-air talks with the former Chelsea man. "I haven’t arranged any meeting," he said. "I don’t see why I should see him." Panucci, then, remains out in the cold and his World Cup hopes as distant as ever after this latest statement from his former Inter boss. Panucci has barely been on speaking terms with Lippi since he took over the running of the national side and has been constantly overlooked by the 57-year-old despite some excellent performances for Roma this season. It is thought that the 32-year-old’s exclusion from the Azzurri side is a result of a personality clash that developed during their association at Inter. Indeed Lippi has persisted with Daniele Bonera and Cristian Zaccardo at right full-back despite, particularly in the case of the Parma player, their indifferent displays for the Azzurri and often bristled at suggestions by journalists to recall Panucci. The Italy boss claims that his decision to omit the Giallorossi wide man has been purely tactical and has always refuted any notion of a dislike for him. "Panucci is a fine player that causes opponents great difficulty," he said recently. "But my selections are purely tactical." The former Milan man, however, suspects otherwise and has said that if Lippi didn’t have an agenda he would have already called him up to the side. "Anyone can see how I’ve been playing," he said. "He hasn’t got a leg to stand on." It seemed that hostilities were about to come to an end with Roma Coach Luciano Spalletti, who is a good friend of Lippi, smoothing the way for appeasement by suggesting a meeting between the two at the Trigoria sports centre, but the Italy Coach is clearly intransigent on the matter. "I’ve been to Trigoria twice," he said, before adding with a hint of irony: "It’s a nice sports centre, but I don’t need to go back for another visit.
