Scott becomes a Blue
Friday, Jan 30, 2004
Chelsea today finalised the signing of England midfield player Scott
Parker from Charlton Athletic in a deal worth £10 million including
associated costs.
The paperwork will be completed in time for him to be considered for
selection against Blackburn Rovers on Sunday but both Chelsea and Charlton
have agreed that Scott will not play when the two clubs meet the following
weekend.
The 23 year-old, who will wear the number 19 shirt, said on his transfer:
“This is a dream move for me. I have been lucky enough to play with a
fantastic team at Charlton under an inspirational manager in Alan Curbishley.
They have given me every opportunity and I will always be grateful for the
support and the encouragement I received at Charlton.
“Chelsea is a big club and for a young player like me it is a once in a
lifetime opportunity. They are one of the biggest clubs in the country,
they’ve got big plans and ambitions and a squad of first-class players.
“The club and the fans are hungry for success and that suits me. They
are all world-class players and I am sure that my own game will improve and
develop playing alongside such talented players. I am also looking forward
to the challenge of playing in Europe.
Head coach Claudio Ranieri said: “We want to attract the top English
players to Chelsea and Scott is one of the best in the country. He is still
very young but he has a range of skills which make him very adaptable.
“His talent has already been recognised at England level. He is a strong
character, determined and tough with first class technical ability. This is
a first class career move for him.”
Interim chief executive Paul Smith, who negotiated the deal, said: “We
are delighted to have completed the signing of Scott. He is one of the
outstanding young talents in this country and one of the most sought after
players by the top clubs.
“We have always said that we plan to build a strong squad of players
and the addition of a talented player like Scott gives us valuable extra
strength. The deal also represents excellent value for money.”
Since making his debut as a 16 year-old, Scott has played 145 games for
the Charlton, scoring ten goals. Last season he was voted their Player of
the Year and he made his full England debut in November against Denmark when
he was on the same pitch as Frank Lampard, John Terry, Joe Cole, Wayne Bridge
and Glen Johnson.
In the wake of the transfer, Chelsea will continue to co-operate and have
a positive relationship with his former club Charlton regarding the loan of
players. Carlton Cole’s loan at The Valley is to be extended to cover next
season.
