That left the door open for Chelsea to really get back into the game, then finally steam- roller us,” Allardyce continued. “The loss of Gary Speed at half-time was a major blow for us. Without him, we lost the extra defensive quality we needed in midfield. We didn’t have the players today just to hang on and weather the storm and they took full advantage of that and battered us with some quality goals and quality football going forward.” That said, big Sam thought things could have worked out quite differently had referee Rob Styles sent Michael Essien off late in the first-half for a tackle on Tal Ben Haim. “To win or get a result here, you always need a slice of luck and a decision to sometimes go your way. Sadly we didn’t get that. We certainly didn’t get it when we hit the bar. The most disappointing thing for me was Essien’s tackle which allowed him to stay on the pitch. That had a major influence on the result of this game. We’ve ended up going down to ten men at 2-1,” Allardyce moaned. “But you can’t take away any credit from Chelsea because as soon as they saw the opportunity, they’ve killed us.
