Watt moves to Wales
Wednesday, Jan 11, 2006
Steven Watt has today left Chelsea to join League One side Swansea City.
The 20 year-old central defender, who had six months left on his contract,
has signed an 18-month contract with the Welsh club, currently top of
their division and the new home of another product of the Chelsea youth
system, Leon Knight, who moved this month from Brighton.
Although Swansea announced the move on their official website yesterday,
the free transfer was not completed until today. Chelsea will receive a
percentage of any future transfer fee.
The highlight of Watt's time at Chelsea was his 90 minute debut against
Scunthorpe in last season's FA Cup. His performance alongside stand-in
centre-back Alexey Smertin was commended by Jose Mourinho and Watt was
given a taste of Premiership action in the closing minutes of Chelsea's
final game of last season at Newcastle. He also played in Mourinho's
first game in charge at Chelsea — a pre-season friendly at Oxford.
Despite growing up in Aberdeen, Watt travelled down regularly to Chelsea
as a schoolboy and was handed his reserve team debut aged just 16. He
signed as a professional in July 2002 and has been a regular at reserve
level for the past three seasons.
In total he played 57+14 games for Chelsea Reserves, scoring one goal. At
youth team level, where he captained, he played 49+6 games with six goals
scored.
Unfortunately, his final reserve game ended with a red card at Tottenham
just before Christmas and earlier in the season he went to League One
Barnsley on a month's loan. However injury and unavailability for the FA
Cup restricted him to just three games although he did score a last-minute
equaliser.
He has played five times for Scotland Under 21s, once for a touring
Scotland B squad and can perhaps count himself unfortunate that with John
Terry, William Gallas, Ricardo Carvalho and Robert Huth at Chelsea, he has
been competing for first team minutes with arguably the strongest
collection of centre-backs at one club in world football.
Chelsea Football Club would like to thank Steven Watt for his contribution
and efforts and wishes him well during Swansea's push for promotion and
for the rest of his career.
