Chelsea turn down Cheshunt striker Opara
17 March 2006
CHESHUNT striker Lloyd Opara has returned to the club after being turned
down by Chelsea following a four-day trial with the Premiership champions.
The Stamford Bridge outfit will not be offering the 22-year-old a contract
- but there were encouraging words for him from Blues reserve team boss
Mick McGiven who put him through his paces at the club's Cobham training
complex.
Opara, who returned to Theobalds Lane for training last night (Thursday),
said: "I sat down with him at the end and he gave me really positive
feedback.
"He said he thought I had a quality attributes, strong, quick and good
timing but because Chelsea set such high standards they won't be taking it
any further with me. He said it's not because I'm a bad player but because
their standards are so high. He said I've got all the attributes to play
at professional level.
"Chelsea are the champions and one of the best teams in the world at the
moment. Them taking an interest and inviting me down is a huge compliment.
Everything was positive.
"Mick was a top bloke from the first moment to the last, he really was
good to me.
"I've spent four days with Chelsea and that's going to stay with me. I've
learnt so much in that time - simple things like when to make certain runs,
working off defenders, things I'd never been told before.
"I felt myself improving in training, I felt sharper and was making the
sort of runs that I wouldn't have done previously."
Opara is suspended for Cheshunt's home match against Chippenham Town
tomorrow (Saturday) but can't wait to get back into action next weekend.
He added: "Now I just want to get back to playing again and scoring goals."
Peterborough, who appeared close to signing Opara before his trial at
Chelsea, still remain a possible destination but there's been no contact
with Cheshunt since last week.
Opara added: "I'd still be interested in joining Peterborough. I had a
great time training there and was impressed with the facilities but at the
moment I just want time to think about things. It's not all down to me
either as I'm contracted to Cheshunt."
And Cheshunt boss Tom Loizou added that unless Peterborough made an offer,
Opara would be going nowhere.
"If they want to sign him, they've got to put an offer in. It's up to them
to get in touch with us. We're not asking for a ridiculous offer, we just
want a bit of money back for investing in Lloyd and something to show for o
ur good judgment.
"Going to Chelsea has been a fantastic opportunity for him and it's great
for our club, Cheshunt, to be mentioned in the same breath as Chelsea.
Lloyd's done very well but they're looking for first team material and he's
not quite up to that standard.
"I've spoken to Mick McGiven and he said Lloyd has done excellently and
very sure there is a professional football club out there for him. It shows
Lloyd's shown he's not out of place in that sort of company and is a credit
to himself and his football club."
