THE THURSDAY INTERVIEW: RAY WILKINS
Posted on: Thu 01 Oct 2009
Three managers in a year; it is reminiscent of Ray Wilkins's time as a
Chelsea player!
But throughout the changes that have taken place at the sharp end of the
coaching staff, our former captain and now assistant first team coach has
been a source of stability. It is now 12 months since his return to work
for the club that nurtured him as a teenage footballer so a good time for
Chelseafc.com to ask his views on how the year has gone.
'It has been very, very eventful,' Ray agrees as he begins his look back.
It has been an absolute delight being back, working with such great guys
and just being around a great club now. But three different managers
hasn't been ultra-easy because everybody has a different philosophy on the
way the game is played.
'Thankfully it has been three very nice guys which has made it a very
pleasant relationship so from that aspect, no problem whatsoever. And
thankfully as well the lads have been playing some great football.'
Ray was initially recruited when Steve Clarke opted to move across London
for greater coaching responsibility under Gianfranco Zola at West Ham. The
role left behind, providing knowledge of the English game and
communicating with top level players and the media as an aid to Luiz
Felipe Scolari, was ideally suited to the man who came in.
'Felipe was a smashing fella and it was just a great shame that it didn't
work out for him,' Ray says. 'But these things happen in football and Guus
[Hiddink] came in and the atmosphere changed around the players and we
became successful.
'Now Carlo [Ancelotti] is here and he has been extremely successful at
other clubs and again is a very nice guy so from that aspect - it's simple.
But obviously with the different philosophies that they have all had, I
have had to change how I have thought about a lot of things to come into
line with the way they work. But I have enjoyed every minute.'
More by accident than design, it is hard to think of anyone better to have
in place to facilitate Ancelotti's acclimatisation, given Ray's past in
Italy. Carlo was even his direct replacement in the AC Milan midfield when
the Englishman returned to play in the UK in 1987, and you suspect Ray has
found it simpler to tune into all an Italian coach thinks about football
than someone from a Latin America culture.
'I do understand the way Carlo thinks about stuff,' is the Wilkins view on
his current working demands. 'I can relate that to the players when he is
asking them to do certain things and a few have said does he mean I do
this when in fact he doesn't. That has been a bonus.

'He can have a waffle on the bench and I can put it into practice for him
but his English is coming on very well indeed. Every day he appears to be
picking up something different with the language and doing really well.
Carlo is enjoying his life which is important for him.'
With Bruno Demichelis recruited from Milan to provide a scientific and
sport psychology arm to the coaching team, plus a youthful input from Paul
Clement, promoted from the Academy via the reserves, a balanced coaching
team is in place.
But having admitted on Chelseafc.com when he was re-recruited by Chelsea
last year that he had found it tough to get back into football coaching,
Ray must have feared the worst when the manager's job started to change
hands. After all, he already experienced losing an assistant's job at
Stamford Bridge when Gianluca Vialli was replaced by Claudio Ranieri.
'You always think that,' he admits on the prospect of being on his way
once again. 'I was asked to come in and help Felipe originally and when
Guus came in, he was coming on his own so there was no problem then.
'But normally Italian coaches bring in their own staff. On this occasion
it hasn't been that way which has been a bonus for all of us, but
certainly there was a thought this may come to a very unfortunate end. But
had it done so then I would have been privileged to have worked with such
fantastic footballers and fantastic people at the club.'
Happily for Ray, continuity is a primary desire of Chelsea Football Club
as it looks to make the next step forward.
'Stability has to happen, from the playing side, the medical side, the
media side, we all have to work together and make it work. We are a very
close club and within we have some great people who work very well
together. The atmosphere is first class.'
Back in the late 1970s when Ray was a shining beacon at bankruptcy-
threatened Chelsea, a very different calibre of playing staff found it
tough to cope with ever-changing managers.
The modern international who puts on a Chelsea shirt is so much more
sophisticated and has experienced so much in his career that he handles
change far more comfortably reckons Ray. Results in the last year bear him
out on that.
So seamlessly does the team alter tactics now that many who have watched
Chelsea this season may not have noticed that within a single game, shapes
don't remain the same.
If puzzling over whether the Blues are a diamond or a Christmas tree has
left you seeing stars, it is understandable.

Wilkins Chelsea Football Club
'We are changing slightly during games,' Ray explains. 'We change probably
once during a game in that we play a diamond and then we will play the
Christmas tree as they like to call it, and even that has changed round on
two or three occasions this season.
'But because the players are so receptive now to change, all it needs is a
shout out onto the pitch and it all seems to click into place again.
'There is no system that is the perfect system because when we play with
the diamond and the Christmas tree, we give away width on the outside of
us so it is slightly more difficult to defend, but most certainly when we
are in possession of the ball, those two systems suit us the best because
our ball retention is so good that we can pass teams to death at times.
And we have the fire power to score as well.'
It is basically a case of backing our ability on the ball to make a
difference in a game.
'With the ball, they are the two best systems,' Ray continues. 'Without
the ball you'd probably be better 4-4-2 where you can block up every
aspect of the pitch, but in possession, it doesn't give us as much.
'We are extremely strong through the middle of the pitch. Yes we
occasionally become slightly vulnerable in wider areas if the opposition
get two players against one against either Ashley [Cole] or Jose
[Bosingwa], but then we must defend the ball that comes in.
'We like to talk more about when we have the ball, not when we haven't. We
like to talk about what we are going to do when we have it, and everybody
has seen what we are capable of.'
Ray has always talked well about on-pitch action. It is why he was in such
demand as a TV analyst in the years when he was out of coaching. But 12
months back in a tracksuit, it is clear this is where he is at his most
happy - on the pitch everyday with world class footballers.

Another of Ray Wilkins's sporting passions sees him involved in the
Chelsea Past Players' Trust Golf Day in Surrey on Sunday 11 October. Sky
Sports' Matt Lorenzo is the host.

'We had our first one of these golf days last year and it went very well
indeed,' Ray says.
'A lot of the past players turn up and play golf and then there is a very
pleasant dinner in the evening and an auction and it all raises money for
the Trust which is a first class association that has come about in the
last few years. A lot of people work hard on that.'
