MANCIENNE IN AS ENGLAND WIN
Posted on: Fri 09 Oct 2009
Viewers of Chelsea TV's live coverage of England Under 21s v Macedonia
were served up a treat on Friday night as England ran out 6-3 winners.
Of the four Chelsea players involved in the England squad, only Michael
Mancienne started the game, playing the full 90 minutes at centre-half,
while Daniel Sturridge was an unused substitute.
England raced into a 2-0 lead before being pegged back to 3-3 due to a
combination of poor defending and bad luck.
Twenty-one-year-old Mancienne, on loan at Wolves, flicked on from a corner
to set up Micah Richards for England's second goal, before his slip
allowed Agim Ibraimi to level the scores at 2-2.
Two goals apiece for forwards Zavon Hines and Andy Carroll completed the
England scoring, after Kieran Gibbs had headed home the first goal early
on.
The win leaves England second in qualifying Group 9, three points behind
Greece but with a game in hand.
Elsewhere, Nemanja Matic played the first 52 minutes in midfield as Serbia
beat Cyprus 2-0, while a commanding performance from Jeffrey Bruma in the
centre of Holland's defence earned them a 1-0 win away in Finland.
The Serbs sit second in Group 7,a point behind Slovakia, while the Dutch
are third in Group 4 but have won both of their games so far.
In the Under 19 section, Milan Lalkovic played 63 minutes for Slovakia
against Slovenia, helping them to a 1-0 win, while Jacob Mellis was on the
scoresheet for England against Finland as they won 3-1. He was subbed on
62 minutes.
At Under 17 level, first year scholar Philipp Prosenik played the entire
game in Austria's attack, scoring the third goal in a 4-2 win away in
Poland.
They next meet Israel on Sunday, before completing European Championship
qualifying against Armenia on Wednesday.

FOUR MORE CHELSEA MEN QUALIFY
Posted on: Sun 11 Oct 2009
Didier Drogba sealed Ivory Coast's spot in next summer's World Cup thanks
to an equalising goal away to Malawi on Saturday.
The 31-year-old forward had started the game as a sub, but scored within
two minutes of his introduction as a sub after 65 minutes.
Salomon Kalou, wearing his favoured number eight international shirt,
played the entire 90 minutes for the Elephants, who progress as top of
Group E in African qualifying, with one game to spare.

Michael Ballack captained Germany as they secured their place in next
summer's tournament after a 1-0 win in Russia. Yury Zhirkov was on the
opposite side, and came close to equalising but will now go into a
play-off to determine whether he follows his clubmate to South Africa.

Ivanovic (6) celebrates with Zdravko Kuzmanovic
Branislav Ivanovic was the fourth successful Chelsea man of the evening,
playing the entirety of Serbia's 5-0 win over Romania.
That victory ensured they could not be caught by France at the top of
Group 7, despite the French beating the Faroe Islands 5-0 in Guingamp.
Starter Nicolas Anelka scored the fourth goal late on, while Florent
Malouda was a 62nd minute sub.
The French will now go into a playoff situation having sewn up the second
spot behind the Serbs.
Things are looking less optimistic for Petr Cech and the Czech Republic
despite their 2-0 win over Poland on Saturday. The Chelsea man kept a
clean sheet in the win but a surprise victory for Slovenia away at
Slovakia make them favourites to finish second behind the Slovaks in
Group 3.
Miroslav Stoch played the entire game in Slovakia's 2-0 defeat, earning
himself a first half booking.

Deco - Portugal
Elsewhere Portugal leapfrogged Sweden to go second in Group One behind
winners Denmark, by beating Hungary 3-0 at home.
Jose Bosingwa, Ricardo Carvalho and Deco all played the 90 minutes, while
Paulo Ferreira was an unused substitute. A win over Malta in midweek will
guarantee a playoff spot.
Despite already having qualified, England fielded a full strength side
away in Ukraine, with John Terry as captain, and Ashley Cole and Frank
Lampard both deployed from the start.
All three played the 90 minutes but things did not go to plan, as England,
reduced to 10 men after goalkeeper Robert Green was sent off, eventually
lost 1-0 after Cole lost possession before deflecting a shot into his own
net. Ukraine skipper Andriy Shevchenko also missed a penalty in the game.
Incidentally, the game fell on the 10th anniversary of Lampard's first
England appearance, a 2-1 win over Belgium at the Stadium of Light. This
was his 75th cap, and for the record, it was Cole's 77th and Terry's 57th.

MIKEL WORLD CUP CONTEST GOING THE DISTANCE
Posted on: Mon 12 Oct 2009
John Mikel Obi did not play but his hopes of joining his fellow African
Chelsea players at the World Cup were kept alive by a late Nigeria win on
Sunday.
Though Mikel travelled to join up with his national squad, the ankle
injury that ruled him out of Chelsea's most recent two games had not
healed sufficiently to take on Mozambique.
It took until three minutes into stoppage time for Nigeria to score the
only goal and secure a home win. They are now two points behind group
leaders Tunisia going into next month's final qualification match so need
the Tunisians to slip up away to Mozambique while obtaining the right
result away to Kenya. Only the top placed side will win a place in South
Africa next summer.
Ghana 'did an England' on Sunday. Having already qualified for the World
Cup with a 100 per cent record, they slipped to defeat with the pressure
off. Michael Essien played the whole of a 1-0 loss away to Benin, the goal
again coming in stoppage time.
Back in Europe on Sunday, Academy striker Philipp Prosenik was involved in
his second match in three days for Austria Under 17s, playing 71 minutes
of a 2-0 win over Israel in Poland. His side lead a qualification
tournament for the European championships.

CLIFFORD MAKES IRELAND STEP-UP
Posted on: Wed 14 Oct 2009
Conor Clifford was a debutant for Republic of Ireland Under 21s on Tuesday
night.
The 18-year-old Chelsea reserve team midfielder (pictured) was elevated
into the Under 21 squad this week after impressive displays as captain of
the Under 19s. He was brought on an hour into the game.
Ireland were a goal down at the time but they equalised in stoppage time
to earn a draw in a European Championship qualifier at home to Switzerland.
Jeffrey Bruma continued his fresh Under 21 career with the Netherlands,
the 17-year-old centre-back playing the whole of a 4-0 win away in Poland.
It made it three clean sheets out of three for Bruma and the Dutch in
their qualification campaign.
There was no such success for Nemanja Matic who played 62 minutes of
Serbia Under 21s' 3-1 defeat away to neighbours Croatia. It was at least a
second match this week for the Chelsea new-season signing as he works up
fitness after injury.
In Under 19 European Championship qualifiers earlier this week, Jacob
Mellis played the whole game and scored the second goal in England's 3-1
win away to Slovenia.
Milan Lalkovic came on in the 83rd minute of Slovakia's 4-0 win at home to
Finland.
The victories take both sides through to the next stage of the
qualification process.
In an Under 19s friendly on Tuesday, Fabio Borini was on-target for Italy,
scoring three minutes into a match away to the Netherlands. He played the
first 73 minutes with Jacopo Sala on the pitch for the entire 1-1 draw.

PORTUGAL FOR PLAY-OFFS BUT CECH MISSES OUT
Posted on: Wed 14 Oct 2009
There was good news for some with World Cup hopes, but goalkeeper Petr
Cech will not be at South Africa 2010.
Despite a clean sheet, there was disappointment for Cech, whose Czech
Republic side could only draw 0-0 at home to Northern Ireland.
The Czechs had needed to win the game, and hope Slovenia dropped points
away to San Marino if they were to make the play-offs, and their failure
to break through the Northern Irish defence became irrelevant after
Slovenia's 3-0 win.
Miroslav Stoch's Slovakia made sure of qualification from that group with
a 1-0 away win in Poland, though the Chelsea man did not feature either as
a starter or among the subs. That was because he was on Under 21 duty, and
scored the only goal for his country in their 1-0 win away to Cyprus,
driving a powerful effort in from 25 yards.
There is renewed hope of qualification for Portugal as they secured their
place in next month's play-offs thanks to a resounding 4-0 home win over
Malta.
Jose Bosingwa, Ricardo Carvalho and Deco each played the 90 minutes, while
Paulo Ferreira was not involved in the squad.
Captain Michael Ballack was replaced at half-time in Germany's 1-1 home
draw with Finland, though they had already qualified, while play-off bound
Yury Zhirkov sat out Russia's 1-1 away draw in Azerbaijan.
Branislav Ivanovic played the whole game as Serbia lost 2-1 away to
Lithuania in Group 7, while Florent Malouda played the whole 90 minutes of
France's 3-1 win over Austria. Nicolas Anelka did not feature.
For England, John Terry and Frank Lampard played the whole 90 minutes in a
comfortable 3-0 win over Belarus. Ashley Cole was rested, allowing former
Chelsea man Wayne Bridge to play at left-back, while Shaun Wright-Phillips
scored the second goal.
England of course had already qualified, along with Ghana, Ivory Coast,
Serbia and Germany, of the countries with a Chelsea involvement.
European play-offs take place next month, when the final African
qualifiers will also be decided, with John Obi Mikel's Nigeria still
hoping to be in South Africa next summer.
