LAMPARD: IT`S ALL ABOUT THE POINTS

Frank Lampard may have returned Chelsea to winning ways with a penalty
strike last night but he insists there's a problem we need to fix.
The midfield maestro knows it wasn't an easy victory over Portsmouth, as
former Chelsea manager Avram Grant arrived at Stamford Bridge for the
first time in 19 months and fielded a side intent on winning freekicks.
And, like the weekend game against Everton, Portsmouth scored a lucky goal
to equaliser after Frederic Piquionne latched onto a double deflection
from Jamie O'Hara's freekick to drill past Petr Cech.
'We're having a patch at the moment where we're not pulling away from
teams when we might do and every freekick and corner seems to drop to them
in a funny way,' explained our vice-captain.
'We are being punished every time and it is just a phase we're in. We're
going 1-0 up and then not pushing on like we were a few games ago. It's a
problem at the moment.'
Lampard's honesty shone through as he spoke following the win and he went
on to insist it's a fully-fixable situation.
'We had a really bad time around this time last year but when Guus Hiddink
came in we were in the best form by far of anyone in the League. We can do
that again.'
Apart from wishing for a dose of luck this Christmas, Chelsea will
endeavour to overcome our current goal-conceding problems by working on
defending set-piece scenarios.
On top of that though, the Blues will also have to work on not giving away
freekicks in the first place.
'We have to be a bit more careful when the ball is in our half even if the
opposition are playing a bit deep because teams like Portsmouth can load
players into the box at freekicks.
'It's important to try and stay on your feet. Some fouls you can't help
because you've mis-timed the tackle but we don't want to be too clumsy and
let people keep launching it in the box.
'Look at the Everton goals, two of them were bounce backs, sometimes you
have little phases when that happens and you're unlucky. We just have to
keep going.'
For now we're three points clear at the top of the table again thanks to
Chelsea's determination not to draw another game at home, but forever
competitive, our number 8 sees plenty of room for improvement.
'We played alright,' reported Lampard, 'but we're not scoring goals. We
had a patch where we were winning four and five nil and now we're having a
patch where everything, especially freekicks, seem to drop to the
opposition.
'But that's football, it's just a patch. If you want to win the league
then you have to push on and have a confidence about yourselves because
it's all about the points.'
