The goalkeeper, 34, who is currently standing in for the injured Petr Cech, replaced Eduardo in the Portuguese goal in a 2-0 win against China in Coimbra. Paulo Ferreira also started, playing the entire 90 minutes at left-back. Ricardo Carvalho was withdrawn from the squad earlier in the week due to feeling a tight hamstring. Conor Clifford played the entire game for Ireland, who still search a first qualifying victory, as they lost 2-1 at home to Armenia in Dublin. Patrick van Aanholt played the whole game for a Dutch side that in essence was an Under 21 B team.
