MELLIS NETS FOR YOUNG ENGLAND
Posted on: Tue 02 Mar 2010
Chelsea reserve team midfielder Jacob Mellis was on-target for England
Under 19s on Tuesday night, his fifth goal in seven appearances at this
level.
Breaking forward, Mellis converted a through pass from captain Matthew
Briggs of Fulham in the seventh minute against the Netherlands. A late
equaliser, an 86th minute own-goal by Manchester United's Reece Brown,
denied England an away win in the friendly.
Gokhan Tore, the left-sided attacker in the Chelsea Under 18s side that
has made the semi-final of the FA Youth Cup, was a substitute at half-time
in Turkey Under 21s home friendly against Slovakia. The visitors won
thanks to a 67th minute goal.
France Under 19s, with Gael Kakuta in their squad, drew 0-0 at home in the
first of two games against Ukraine. The second match is on Thursday.

MIXED NIGHT ON INTERNATIONAL DUTY
Posted on: Thu 04 Mar 2010
Hilario made his international debut as a half-time substitute for
Portugal on Wednesday night.
The goalkeeper, 34, who is currently standing in for the injured Petr
Cech, replaced Eduardo in the Portuguese goal in a 2-0 win against China
in Coimbra. Paulo Ferreira also started, playing the entire 90 minutes at
left-back.
Ricardo Carvalho was withdrawn from the squad earlier in the week due to
feeling a tight hamstring.
Michael Ballack (pictured winning a header against Lionel Messi) captained
Germany as they went down 1-0 to Argentina in Munich, heading Philip
Lahm's cross narrowly wide as his side sought an equaliser, while
Frenchmen Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda were also beaten, 2-0 by
Spain in Paris.
Anelka started the game, forcing Iker Casillas into a smart save before
being withdrawn with 13 minutes remaining. Malouda was a 74th minute
replacement for Franck Ribery, meaning the pair shared just three minutes
on the field.
The furthest afield Chelsea player was Branislav Ivanovic, whose Serbia
were 3-0 winners in Algeria, the 26-year-old playing at right-back for
Radomir Antic's side.
Closest to Stamford Bridge were Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou, as the
Ivory Coast played an afternoon friendly against South Korea at Queens
Park Rangers' Loftus Road in London. The Koreans ran out 2-0 winners as
Drogba played the full 90 minutes, smashing a free-kick into the wall,
while Kalou was unused as a substitute.
John Terry and Frank Lampard were both in England's starting line-up
against Egypt at Wembley, a game that eventually ended 3-1 to the hosts.
Lampard twice came close to scoring before being replaced at the break,
while Terry remained on the field for the entire 90 minutes. A section of
the Wembley crowd greeted his name announced before the game and early
touches with jeers. They died away as he performed well. Wayne Bridge may
have been missing, but one former Chelsea man at Manchester City did
feature, Shaun Wright-Phillips scoring England's second goal, sandwiched
between a brace from Peter Crouch.
Finally at senior level, Miroslav Stoch, currently on loan at FC Twente in
Holland, was a 71st minute sub for Slovakia, as they lost 1-0 at home to
Norway.
Down at Under 21 level, Ryan Bertrand, on loan at Reading, started at
left-back for England as Stuart Pearce's side were beaten 2-1 by Greece at
Doncaster in a European Championship qualifier.
Daniel Sturridge was a 54th minute sub, but his introduction could not
improve matters, England's consolation coming from Aston Villa forward
Nathan Delfouneso. Michael Mancienne, loaned to Wolves, was an unused sub,
while Jack Cork, with Burnley, was not named in the matchday squad.
Nemanja Matic played 90 minutes in midfield in Serbia U21s' friendly away
in Macedonia. Serbia lost 1-0.
Jeffrey Bruma, 18, laid on an assist for Holland in their 3-2 win over
Poland, and played the entire game at centre-back. Fabio Borini played the
first 68 minutes for Italy as they beat Hungary 2-0 and went close to
scoring before being subbed.
Conor Clifford played the entire game for Ireland, who still search a
first qualifying victory, as they lost 2-1 at home to Armenia in Dublin.
Patrick van Aanholt played the whole game for a Dutch side that in essence
was an Under 21 B team. They lost 2-1 away to a Slovenian side.
