YOUTH CUP REPORT: CHELSEA 4 BLACKBURN ROVERS 0 (AGG: 5-0)
Posted on: Mon 22 Mar 2010
Chelsea youth team are through to our second FA Youth Cup Final in three
years following a brilliant Monday evening performance.
The Academy Under 18 side dominated throughout as we hosted Blackburn in
the second leg of the semi-final. The first finished 1-0 in our favour.
In front of an impressive and noisy crowd at Stamford Bridge, the Blues
produced some beautiful football to overcome a stuttering Blackburn side.
Goals came from a Jacopo Sala brace, added to by Marko Mitrovic and Gokhan
Tore.
The team was unchanged from that which started at Ewood Park, with Sam
Walker in goal and Jeffrey Bruma alongside Daniel Mills Pappoe in central
defence. It was a side led by midfielder Conor Clifford.
Despite his dismissal at Blackburn, Kaby Djalo was able to start as the
rule for suspension following a red at this level comes into effect seven
days after the incident. Wearing bright yellow boots, the skilful
Portuguese youngster took up position in midfield.
Djalo made his presence felt inside the first five minutes, twice
intercepting and tackling to prevent a Blackburn break.
Chelsea's first real period of pressure arrived soon after, with Aziz
Deen-Conteh and Gokhan Tore teaming up well on the left side but it was
Djalo's skill which offered our first real chance.
Cleverly skipping over the top of the ball before back heeling down the
flank, he released Deen-Conteh who launched a cross inches too long at the
far post.
Centre-forward Mitrovic was then able to test the keeper, diving to head
at the far post, only for Josh Swann to confidently gather on the floor.
However, he wasn't quite so certain for his next save when minutes later
Tore smashed a long-range effort towards the bottom right. Swann parried
away but it would take one more save before his goal was safe.
Chelsea were dominating the opening 15 minutes, with Josh McEachran
(pictured below), Conor Clifford, Djalo and Tore all further troubling the
Blackburn defence.

McEachran
Our back four were showing the stability we'd expect from a defence with
the record of only conceding once in the FA Youth Cup campaign. They
successfully smothered out any Blackburn attack, with Mills Pappoe proving
a brick wall for the visiting Michael Potts.
Potts' day got worse when Conor Clifford went in with a crushing
challenge, knocking the number 10 into the air and down. The referee
played on but with our defensive line in control, we were soon on the
counter attack.
The best Blackburn mustered inside the first 20 minutes of football was a
weak header towards the top left, which Walker dealt with expertly.
But despite the visitors' failure to threaten our goal, they were becoming
more of a presence around the box. This provided an opportunity for
Chelsea to prove our counter-attack capabilities.
It was from such a break we won a corner that enabled Bruma to deftly head
goal-ward. This time Swann read the situation and collected the header.
Sala would be the first Blue to fire over when Deen-Conteh dealt with a
Blackburn corner and Chelsea broke once more. The Italian collected on the
right flank before cutting inside and drilling a shot from the edge of the
box.
It took two attempts from Swann to gather a further Tore shot before
Chelsea finally took the lead.
Opting to block with his feet a hopeful Bruma 35-yard shot that was going
wide anyway, Swann only succeeded in chipping the ball into Mitrovic's
path. The striker was able to coolly slot past the dumbstruck keeper for
his fifth goal of the cup run.
Twenty-nine minutes had gone and three minutes later it was two and this
time Sala was the scorer. A save from Swann following a good McEachran
shot diverted the ball to the Italian's feet as he broke towards the near
post. It was another calm finish to make it 2-0.

Sala cheers
Chelsea were forced into a change with Milan Lalkovic replacing an injured
Conor Clifford with Bruma taking the armband.
Lalkovic made an immediate impact, dribbling down the right before
launching a cross to Djalo which narrowly missed going into the far corner
on its own.
With frustrations beginning to show in the Blackburn side, the referee
soon brandished his first card to Tom Hitchcock who cut Deen-Conteh to the
ground from behind only minutes before the break.
From the restart Chelsea controlled once more, although Bruma was forced
to block a Hitchcock shot.
Blackburn also won two consecutive corners before the hour mark and as the
Blues dealt with the first of these, Mills Pappoe took a knock and
received treatment in the box.
But he was soon back up and the second corner was dispersed before the
schoolboy central defender received a yellow for a late challenge 30 yards
out from Blackburn's goal. Seconds later another yellow was shown, this
time for a late challenge on Lalkovic, giving Chelsea another goal-scoring
opportunity from 25 yards out.
Keen not to make silly errors and risk the emphatic lead (now 3-0 on
aggregate), Chelsea became more compact to prevent the visitors creating
further chances.
It worked and soon Tore made it three, turning the ball inside the far
post as the Blues overran the Blackburn defence. It was a fantastic goal
with the young Turk helping in the build-up as well.
Dancing along the edge of the box before laying off to McEachran, who then
tapped back to Sala, Tore had now broken past the back line and Sala
released a through ball for him to tap home with 70 minutes gone.
There was a further yellow for Jason Lowe soon after, as Blackburn battled
for possession, before Walker tipped over their best chance of the half.
In retaliation to that shot, Chelsea scored a beautifully worked fourth
goal on 76 minutes.
First Tore used his physical power to break beyond the Blackburn back line
before releasing Sala will a well-placed pass across the front of the box.
With only the keeper to beat, the Italian converted with ease for his
second of the night.
Blackburn nearly pulled one back with a scramble in the box as Walker held
onto a attempted lob but the score remained 4-0, giving Chelsea a place in
our fifth FA Youth Cup Final.
'I am really happy for everyone involved tonight,' said youth team manager
Dermot Drummy after the game. 'We believed in our ability and worked
really hard for this.
'The boys were fantastic, so were the goals. Sala had a great touch, Tore
was brilliant but the back four were solid once more for us. The whole
side's composure in the heat of battle was really impressive today,' he
added.
The final will be against Aston Villa or Newcastle who have yet to play
their semi-final first leg. The dates for the two-legged final have yet to
be set. Both matches will be shown live on Chelsea TV.
