RESERVE REPORT: FULHAM 2 CHELSEA 1

A late rally by Chelsea's second string during which Daniel Philliskirk
(pictured) netted was not enough to turnaround a deficit of two goals
conceded in the opening half-hour.
Sandwiched between games for the youth team and the first team, the
reserves made a short journey to Fulham's Motspur Park training ground on
Tuesday evening for their penultimate away fixture of the season, but
couldn't find the win that would have taken them above the home team and
into third in the Premier Reserve League South.
Manager Steve Holland was at least able to give Sam Hutchinson his first
competitive game of 2010 and the captain, who had not played since early
December due to injury, successfully completed his intended 45 minutes.
In the third of those minutes Fabio Borini had a go for Chelsea and drew a
near-post save from the Fulham keeper, Neil Etheridge, before the home
side tested Sam Walker who dived to stop Robert Milsom's well-struck drive.
The same Fulham midfielder had a follow-up dig but shot wide.
Chelsea then enjoyed a spell of pressure without chances but it was Fulham
who next tested the opposing keeper. Fifteen minutes had passed when
Walker reacted sharply to keep out a Danny Hoesen shot that was really
travelling after Fulham won possession in our half. The Chelsea keeper was
making his reserve debut and was doing well.
Unfortunately the defence in front of the Youth Cup keeper was less adept
at dealing with the corner from Christopher Buchtmann that followed,
Hoesen allowed to find a way through with the ball at his feet to slot
home.
A Chelsea chance came Jacob Mellis's way midway through the half after
Kakuta had played the ball into the box but under pressure he shot over.
The Fulham second came from Erik Nevland on 27 minutes, the Norwegian
there to finish from close range after his strike partner, Hoesen, had
found space on the left to power the ball in towards the Norwegian's near-
post run.
Borini, starved of possession, tried to find a way through all on his own
but the Fulham central defence door closed firmly. Nikki Ahamed and Mellis
then combined smartly to find the Italian striker but his ambitious
curling effort cleared the target by some distance.
Kakuta had a free-kick chance in stoppage time before the break after a
foul on Nana Ofori-Twumasi but shot over.
Rohan Ince, himself recently back from long-term injury, was Hutchinson's
replacement for the second half. A sub last night in the Youth Cup, the
tall first-year scholar went in to midfield with Liam Birdcutt dropping
into central defence.
Before the second-half was five minutes old, Walker was saving well from
Nevland to prevent the Blues going 3-0 down.
Milan Lalkovic, who had found time to manufacture crosses hard to come by,
did loop a dangerous one under the bar but Fulham cleared.
Kakuta, lively early on, made a planned exit just before the hour to be
replaced by Bobby Devyne and George Saville came on for Lalkovic, who had
played almost an hour last night.
Borini should have done better when Ahamed found him in space well inside
the area but ball control let him down.
Bridcutt became the game's first booking on 67 minutes for chopping Chris
Buchtmann on the edge of the area and Keanu Marsh-Brown's free-kick curved
wide of the target.
Chelsea stuck to the task and Ince's longer range of passing occasionally
stretched play. It was from one such ball that Borini opted not use team-
mates and instead worked the keeper from a difficult angle.
Finally, with 12 minutes left on the clock the deficit was cut. Devyne was
the supplier, crossing high from the left for Daniel Philliskirk, forward
from midfield, to dart ahead of the keeper and nod into the net.
The closing stages were mostly Chelsea's. Borini was sent away by Mellis
but couldn't place his shot past Etheridge and when the ball rolled back
for a Mellis shot, that was blocked. Moments later Ahamed shot over from
the edge of the area.
