CHELSEA MAGAZINE: ACADEMIES TO COUNTER ATTACKS
Posted on: Tue 13 Apr 2010
John Obi Mikel and Salomon Kalou both feature heavily in the latest
instalment of Chelsea magazine, out today.
The club's official publication covers a dramatic month for the Blues,
with features ranging from tactical changes to one of the most engaging
Star on a Stool events this season.
In an entertaining interview, Mikel digests comparisons made by the
manager which suggest the Nigerian has a playing style similar to the
young Carlo Ancelotti.
Our number 12 discusses his methods and role models, revealing that during
his younger days in Nigeria he was a fan of Arsenal, where Nicolas Anelka
and Ashley Cole drew most of his attention.

Mikel reveals his role models...
'It was fantastic when he [Anelka] joined us a few years ago,' says Mikel.
'We signed someone I had been supporting since I was little.'
But when it comes to disclosing his favourite player of all it turns out
one of Anelka's previous international team mates makes the grade for
Mikel, former Real Madrid man Zinedine Zidane.
'He's the best player I have ever seen. He was so special, the way he
played, the way he used the ball, he was so calm and just did his thing,'
explains Mikel. 'I always loved him when I was little.'
Kalou's interview covers wider topics, as the Ivorian speaks about his
nation's hopes at the World Cup and the influence of the Jean-Marc Guillou
Academy on his country's success.
It's an academy which has fed all but three players into the current Ivory
Coast squad, and helped countless young Ivorians graduate into European
football, of which Kalou is one.

Kalou's intriguing interview...
'It's set up like a European Academy and when you come to Europe from
there you already know what's going on,' reports Kalou.
'We knew how to position ourselves, when to play one-twos, when to go on
by yourself and when to play for the team - we knew all of this by the
time we came to Europe.'
Speaking of tactical prowess, the latest Chelsea magazine also breaks down
the advantages of counter-attacks in the Tactics Board section, with an
expert opinion from Deco.
The feature uses our recent 7-1 thumping of Villa as an example of the
prolific power counter attacks can offer to a game but they take stamina,
a quality that is discussed later on in the publication.
For aspiring footballers and experienced players alike, Chelsea magazine
gives a full explanation as to why stamina is so important in the modern
game. It also offers several training tips to help build your stamina and
sustain it.
But that's not all, there's still a picture story from our recent fund-
raising event with Armani and all the news from the last Star on a Stool,
which saw Ancelotti field questions from fans alongside Ray Wilkins.

Carlo and Ray take part in Star on a Stool
And, as we head towards the 40th anniversary of our first FA Cup win,
Chelsea magazine takes a look back over the memorable time and speaks to
some of the people involved, including Eddie McCreadie and Ron Harris.
Older fans can relive the tour down King's Road and reminisce over the
huge turnout of fans in west London, while younger Blues can learn all
there is to know about our successful Cup run.
Beginning with a 3-0 win over Birmingham, the club's official magazine
documents every game on that amazing FA Cup-winning campaign, before a
fantastic write-up on the final itself.
On top of that, there's an interview with rising star Aziz Deen-Conteh,
who's had a fantastic season in the Academy's defensive line and now has
an FA Youth Cup Final to look forward to.
The first year scholar talks about his arrival at the club, the Youth Cup
run and adapting his role from game to game, moving from full-back to
centre-back in some stages of the Cup competition.

There are also competitions, fantastic photos and three true Blues gives
their opinions on the season so far in Fan Chat, all in May's edition of
Chelsea magazine.
Chelsea magazine costs a mere £3.25 and is available now in the Chelsea
Megastore and all good newsagents.
