NEW MAGAZINE IN SAFE HANDS
Posted on: Thu 07 Apr 2011
Petr Cech talks trophies and records as the shot-stopper discusses seven
years at the club in this month's Chelsea magazine, on sale today.
During that time, Cech has accumulated an array of winners' medals and
made 300 appearances for the Blues, a landmark reached earlier this year
when we travelled to Blackpool.
It's a notable achievement and he's only the second foreign-born player to
do it in a Chelsea shirt. It also means he's nearly half way to Peter
Bonetti's total of 729 club appearances.
That said, the Czech international doesn't feel he'll ever come near to
the Cat's impressive milestone: 'He spent 20 years at the same club,'
explained Cech in the club's official publication.

Cech's the cover story in the new magazine
'That's a long time, and you never know, but at the moment I can't see me
still playing when I'm 38 or older. I can hardly imagine it because
nowadays the game is so fast.'
The only other foreign player to reach the 300-game mark was a name adored
by every Blue, a piccolo Italian called Gianfranco Zola.
The striker donned the Chelsea shirt 312 times during his illustrious
career in west London and, ever the realist, Cech is now setting his
sights on that number instead of the Cat's record.
'If I can get over 312 games, that's another milestone and it will make me
proud again,' said the 28-year-old.
Talk of pride brings up an interesting point of view when considering
Chelsea's greatest games during Cech's time at the club. Many fans would
consider the 4-2 Champions League win over Barcelona in 2005 and the 4-4
draw with Liverpool four years later, but not Cech.

Goalkeepers' Union
'The Liverpool match is not my greatest memory because I made a mistake
for the first goal and then I almost didn't touch the ball and conceded
four times!
'Afterwards you say what a great game it was but when you get home you
think, 'Oh my God, what a hard game to live with.'
Sticking with goalkeepers, Chelsea magazine also looks back over the
careers of some of the club's shot-stoppers over the decades, from Ben
Howard Baker all the way to Carlo Cudicini.
Jose Bosingwa talks fans through some of his most memorable images since
joining the Blues before Florent Malouda reveals unknown facts about
himself in Did You Know… Florent Malouda.

Did You Know...
And, remembering days-gone-by, Chelsea magazine talks to John Boyle about
his time at the club, which saw the then-24-year-old win the European Cup
Winners' Cup in 1971.
There are plenty more interviews as well, including one with Academy
defender Tomas Kalas and a fan chat with Tommy Langley. Aspiring
footballers can also learn how to avoid getting injured and hear from the
Carlo Ancelotti in You Ask the Manager.
Chelsea magazine is available in the Stadium Megastore and all good
newsagents priced at £3.25.
