POST SEASON BRIEFING – 2009/10
Posted on: Sat 22 May 2010
So, have you got your breath back yet? If so, let's add some facts and
figures to the thrilling story. They've been supplying all the info all
season and now club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul
Dutton review nine months that shook SW6...
----------------
'Veni, vidi, vici,' enthused Italy's daily newspaper La Repubblica on 9
May. 'New Julius Caesar, Carlo Ancelotti, conquers England on his first
attempt to become the king of London.'
Those words, drenched in history, for a fellow countryman - elsewhere
dubbed 'King Charles III' - who had just delivered to Chelsea our first
Premier League title since 2006, and the third in six seasons, were
perhaps the most fitting amid the universal praise for his achievement.
No Italian coach has ever previously won the Premier League title, and
only his Stamford Bridge predecessor Jose' Mourinho had done so in his
first season after arriving in this country.
When Ancelotti added the FA Cup to his honours the following weekend
(surpassing Mourinho) he joined Kenny Dalglish as the only manager since
1888 to win the Double in England in his debut season. Only six other
clubs have achieved a League and FA Cup Double.
Chelsea's silverware-laden season (which also included the Community
Shield) was remarkable in so many ways. The club and individuals set
several new benchmarks, climbed many all-time rankings and once again
proved one of the biggest sporting attractions on the planet.
The Blues' title chase, which went to the wire against Manchester United,
was watched by a bigger live TV audience than for any since 2003/4, and
the BBC's highlights show, Match Of The Day, reportedly recorded its best
figures for a decade.
On the final weekend of the season, the Blues' eight-up against Wigan, and
the subsequent trophy presentation, was watched live on Sky by an average
of 1.1m people, 7.4% of the satellite-viewing nation - the highest
multichannel figure that weekend.
In early season, for the showdown at the Bridge between Chelsea and
Manchester United, 12% of the non-terrestrial channel-viewing public -
more than £3m viewers - watched John Terry score the decisive goal. (That
was a bigger draw than ITV2's 'Xtra Factor' later the same day, and 1.2m
more than tuned in to England's T20 cricket final victory last week.)
Chelsea's decisive win at Old Trafford in April, which the satellite
channel used to launch its new 3D service, weighed in with an even heftier
market share - 22.3% - and an average of 2.25m viewers.

Man United v Chelsea
That table-topping clash was a huge hit Stateside too - setting a new
record TV audience there for a broadcast from England's top tier of
526,000. That was despite kicking off at 4.45am US west coast time.
In terms of revenue, this season generated revenue from television rights
of £10.9m, £1m fewer than Man Utd, while the merit money from our league
placing brought £16m into the coffers - £0.8m more than went Old
Trafford's way.
Chelsea are now becoming not just part of the Premier League firmament
worldwide, but embedded in English football history. The Blues are now the
only club other than Liverpool to have completed the domestic season
triple-double:
League + FA Cup (2009/10)
League + League Cup (2004/5)
FA Cup + League Cup (2006/7)
In the Premier League era since 1992/3 only Manchester Utd have won more
major trophies.

The Unofficial 'Arsene Wenger League' Top 5
===========================================
This time last season Arsene Wenger proposed a change in the Premier
League. He suggested that a team should be awarded three points for a win
but an additional point for every goal in the margin of victory.
His idea was supposed to encourage teams to keep going for goals when they
were ahead, providing greater entertainment. As the table below shows,
however, the proposal would make virtually no difference to the final
table, except that Chelsea would have finished 35 points ahead of the
Professor's team. Surely the present margin of 11 was entertaining enough.

1. Chelsea 165 (86)
2. Man Utd 157 (85)
3. Arsenal 130 (75)
4. Tottenham 115 (70)
5. Man City 106 (67)
The 2010 FA Cup final was Chelsea's seventh in 17 seasons, our tenth
overall, and our sixth success in the competition, placing us sixth on the
lists for final appearances and trophy winners. We became the first club
since Arsenal in 2003 to retain the silverware.

Cech Chelsea
Petr Cech has remained unbeaten in the FA Cup since arriving at Stamford
Bridge in 2004/5. The keeper is one of eight Chelsea players who have now
won the league title three times. The others are Ricardo Carvalho, Joe
Cole, Didier Drogba, Paulo Ferreira, John Terry and Frank Lampard.
Lamps managed a whole season without a single booking, despite figuring in
most games, having had his name taken just once the campaign before.
Steven Gerrard was cautioned six times, Cesc Fabregas and Darren Fletcher
five. Chelsea were the fourth least-booked team this season with 56, but
remain the most cautioned over the Premier League era with 1,057 yellows.
Another 22 goals this season made it 129 (30 penalties) for Frank, who is
now the second-highest all-time scorer still plying his trade in the
Premier League behind Michael Owen with 147.
Player of the Year Didier Drogba also had an outstanding season, his total
of 29 league goals only having been surpassed by Jimmy Greaves (32 in
1958/9 and 41 in 1960/1) throughout our top-flight history. He is now one
behind Greavesie's 132 career goals in all competitions.

Between them Didi and Lamps accounted for 51 of Chelsea's 103 strikes in
this league campaign. Plus 71 was easily the best goal difference
(averaged to 1.87 per game to account for fluctuating numbers of teams)
ever recorded in top flight English football back to 1893.
The Blues also recorded the most home goals per game (3.58) since Everton
in 1931/2 (4.0), and became the first team to score seven goals or more
four times in one campaign since the 1934/5 Arsenal side in which future
Chelsea boss Ted Drake set an individual record for that club (including
four against his future employers).
A clean sweep of wins versus the others who made up last season's top
four, home and away, included Drog goals at Anfield, the Emirates and Old
Trafford. The Ivorian also notched his sixth goal in six Wembley finals.
At the other end of the scale, Ashley Cole set a new personal record for
goals in a season with four. His previous best was three with Arsenal in
2000/1.
Ash also won his sixth FA Cup winners' medal, the most for any player in
the tournament's history.
