MCEACHRAN AND CORK IMPRESS FOR YOUNG ENGLAND
Posted on: Tue 08 Feb 2011
Josh McEachran started his first Under 21 international match and Jack
Cork impressed coming off the bench despite England losing in Italy on
Tuesday afternoon.
McEachran had previously played the closing minutes of a friendly against
Germany at this level and having been elevated to the latest Under 21squad
following injury to others, the 17-year-old was put straight into the
action by coach Stuart Pearce.
Becoming more influential as the game rolled on, McEachran set up his
side's best chance late on when the pass of the game from his own half
presented former Chelsea man Scott Sinclair with a one-on-one that the
keeper saved.
McEachran was substituted a few moments later, with 37 minutes of the
second-half played.
It was a game of few chances, especially in the first half. After 12
minutes Everton's Jack Rodwell went off injured so his place in central
defence went to Cork, currently on loan from Chelsea to Burnley, and the
21-year-old's performance was as good as any by a player wearing an
England shirt. It was his 11th Under 21 appearance.

The game was close to stoppage time at the end of the second half when
Cork's partner at the back, Manchester City's Ben Mee conceded a penalty
and was sent-off. The spot-kick was scored by Manchester United's Federico
Macheda to give the home nation victory in Empoli's stadium. Jacopo Sala
was not involved for the Italians.
After the game, Pearce said: 'Chelsea think extremely highly of him
[McEachran] and you can see why. He's got the ability and the vision that
you know, if players run off of him, he's got the ability to find them
with passes.
'All of our cutting passes probably came from him. He's got a really
outstanding talent, similar to [Jack] Wilshere, and it bodes well for us.
He's come in and played outstandingly well so if he is going to start for
me then he will be in the Under-21 squad from now on. If I feel as though
he is going to come in and be a squad player, then there's no need and he
will stay with the Under-19s and play football.'

INTERNATIONALS: COAST TO VICTORY
Posted on: Wed 09 Feb 2011
Didier Drogba played his first international football since last summer's
World Cup as Ivory Coast beat Mali 1-0 on Tuesday evening.
The match was a friendly encounter held in Valence in France and was only
three minutes old when Drogba was involved in the move for the only goal
of the game, scored by Hannover's Didier Ya Konan who later left the field
on a stretcher.
Drogba came through unscathed and played the full game. The Chelsea
striker volleyed a first-half chance off-target and Salomon Kalou was also
involved in the game. He had two second-half chances, one after he beat
three players but shot over and the other from a Drogba free-kick.
Mali wasted a chance to equalise when they missed a penalty.
Also on Tuesday night, Milan Lalkovic began his first game for Slovakia at
Under 21 level. The 18-year-old attacker played the first 55 minutes of a
3-1 away defeat to France.

TWO ENGLAND CAPTAINS
Posted on: Thu 10 Feb 2011
Frank Lampard was replaced as England captain by Ashley Cole at half-time
in England's 2-1 win over Denmark in Copenhagen.
It was the first time either had worn the captain's armband for their
country, on a night when Cole became England's most-capped full-back, on
his 87th appearance.
Lampard, winning his 84th cap, played the first half while Cole lasted 81
minutes before being substituted. John Terry, a former England captain,
played the entire game in the centre of defence.
Fernando Torres was a substitute for Spain as they defeated Colombia 1-0
thanks to a late David Silva winner.
Florent Malouda was a starter for France as they overcame a Brazil side
including David Luiz, the hosts 1-0 winners in a repeat of the 1998 World
Cup Final.
Malouda said after that game: 'I am very happy. This kind of game, albeit
a friendly, against a world-class team like Brazil is a big plus in
confidence.
'We tried, to compete with their level of technical quality, keeping the
ball. With the state of the pitch, it was not easy, but we tried to play
on the ground and use the width.'
Petr Cech had a night to forget as Croatia beat his Czech Republic side
4-2 in Pula, the Chelsea man playing the full 90 minutes but was at fault
for the final goal where he was caught in possession outside his area,
albeit it with little support from his team-mates.
Branislav Ivanovic's Serbia were 2-0 winners away at Israel in Tel Aviv,
the Chelsea man starting at right-back for his country and playing 65
minutes.
Jose Bosingwa remained on the bench for Portugal's 2-1 defeat by Argentina
in Switzerland.
At Under 21 level, Conor Clifford completed Ireland's 0-0 draw away at
Cyprus, while Jeffrey Bruma and Patrick van Aanholt, who is on loan at
Leicester, began Holland's 1-0 defeat to Czech Republic. Bruma was
replaced on 73 minutes while Van Aanholt completed the 90.
Finally, Rhys Taylor, on loan with Crewe, kept a clean sheet for Wales
Under 21s as they defeated Northern Ireland 2-0.
