SUPER EAGLES MARCH ON
Posted on: Sun 03 Feb 2013
Chelsea's trio of Nigerians is through to the semi-final of the African
Cup of Nations after a surprise victory over Ivory Coast in Rustenburg on
Sunday.
John Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and Kenneth Omeruo will now face Mali on
Wednesday after seeing off the threat of former Chelsea team-mates Didier
Drogba and Salomon Kalou, not to mention current Premier League rivals the
Toure brothers and Arsenal's Gervinho.
All three completed the 90 minutes, with Moses in particular a constant
menace to the Ivory Coast defence following his match-winning penalties
against Ethiopia in their previous game.
Like that game earlier in the week, the winger was given the
responsibility of set-pieces, and regularly delivered accurately. Early on
Ideye Brown headed his free-kick high and shortly afterwards he stung the
palms of Ivory Coast goalkeeper Boubacar Barry with a vicious drive.
Omeruo had the unenviable task of marking Drogba, but kept the striker
largely quiet for a man Chelsea fans are so used to seeing so much from.
He did wriggle free once in the first half but shot off target, shortly
before Emmanuel Emenike gave the Nigerians with a fizzing drive from a
free-kick, with which Barry should have done far better.
Just into the second half Kalou was booked for taking a tumble inside the
Nigeria box, but his side were soon level when Drogba was fouled on the
edge of the box and his cross was turned home by Newcastle's Cheik Tiote.
Brown headed another Moses corner wide as Nigeria reacted well to the
leveller, and they went back in front 12 minutes from time when midfielder
Sunday Mba drove deep into Ivory Coast territory before pulling the
trigger and seeing his shot loop up off the backside of Sol Bamba and over
Barry into the net.
In injury time Drogba headed Ivory Coast's final chance over at a
free-kick, and the Super Eagles were through to the last four. They have
so far improved as the tournament has progressed.
It means Chelsea will be without two important figures for a little
longer, but without a victory in the tournament since 1994, we can only
wish them well.

INTERNATIONALS: UNBEATEN BLUES
Posted on: Tue 05 Feb 2013
Both Josh McEachran and Nathaniel Chalobah took part in England Under-21s'
convincing friendly win over Sweden Under-21s on Tuesday evening.
Both played in midfield with Chalobah replacing McEachran with two-thirds
of the game played. On a rainy night and on a soft pitch in Walsall,
England were still able to impress in a 4-0 victory over a young Sweden
side.
Blackpool's Thomas Ince and Liverpool's Jonjo Shelvey put the home side
2-0 up, both with close-range finishes, before England won a penalty which
McEachran took. It was saved but Ince followed up to score.
Three-nil was the score when Chalobah came on, following his England Youth
Player of the Year award this week with his second cap at this level.
Sunderland's Connor Wickham completed the scoring with a header. McEachran
made his 10th England Under-21 appearance.
There was also a win for England over Scandinavian opposition at Under-19
level. They beat Demark 3-1 in Doncaster. Chelsea representation was Lewis
Baker who came on with 67 minutes played and all the goals scored.
Patrick van Aanholt and Jeffrey Bruma were involved as Netherlands
Under-21s came from 1-0 behind to win 3-2 away to Croatia. Van Aanholt
played the full game at left-back with Bruma coming on at half-time with
the score 1-1.
Thorgan Hazard was a half-time substitute for Belgium Under-21s at home to
Spain. The score was 1-1 at the time and that was the final score too.

NIGERIAN TRIO INTO AFRICAN FINAL
Posted on: Wed 06 Feb 2013
John Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and Kenneth Omeruo have helped Nigeria
through to their first African Cup of Nations final since 2000, with a
4-1 win over Mali in the semis in Durban on Wednesday.
They will now face Burkina Faso in Sunday's final after Ghana lost on
penalties in the other semi-final.
The Super Eagles were the better side throughout in their game, and took
full control of the game well before half-time, establishing a 3-0 lead
before the break, meaning they will be in confident mood whoever they face
at the final hurdle.
Once again, all three Blues were prominent, with Moses creating the first
goal before being substituted as a precaution early in the second half.
Fourteen minutes in Mikel's long ball into the box found Emmanuel Emenike,
whose shot was well saved by the goalkeeper before Moses saw his follow-up
deflected behind.
Shortly afterwards it was Mikel himself going close, half-volleying just
wide from well outside the area, and it would not be long before Nigeria
went in front.
Moses was the creator, outfoxing his marker with a nutmeg down the right
before crossing between the goalkeeper and defence to pick out Uwa
Echiejile at the far post, allowing him a simple header into the net.
The lead was doubled just before the 30-minute mark with Moses again
involved, supplying the pass to release Emenike down the wing, and he
squared for Brown Ideye to convert.
A minute before half-time Emenike's free-kick, laid off to him by Mikel,
was deflected past the Mali goalkeeper to make it 3-0, and set the
Nigerians up for their first final appearance in 13 years.
Moses was forced off with a knock to the foot just into the second half,
but that didn't stop Nigeria from looking for more goals, and on the hour
mark another rangy Mikel pass set Ahmed Musa beyond the hapless Mali
defence, and he slotted home through the goalkeeper's legs to make it four.
The same player thought he had scored a fifth a moment later but the
referee ruled it out for offside, and then at the other end Nigerian
keeper Vincent Enyeama made a superb one-handed save after a mix-up
between Omeruo and his defensive partner.
The Malians would get their consolation though, when substitute Cheik
Diarra turned home from close range, but the only side celebrating
afterwards was Nigeria.
Now, it is on to Sunday's final.

INTERNATIONALS: AZPILICUETA CAPPED ON NIGHT OF VICTORIES
Posted on: Wed 06 Feb 2013
As well as the England v Brazil match, there were other Chelsea players in
friendly action on Wednesday with plenty of success enjoyed.
Cesar Azpilicueta played the full match on the occasion of his debut for
Spain, and celebrated with a 3-1 win against Uruguay in a match played in
Qatar.
It was a solid game too for the 23-year-old who intervened to prevent
chances for both Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez.
Juan Mata also started and played the first half before being replaced by
David Villa. It was Mata who supplied Cesc Fabregas for an early opening
goal, struck from distance. Barcelona's Pedro scored twice in the second
half.
Eden Hazard was on-target with a 10th-minute penalty for Belgium at home
to Slovakia. Kevin De Bruyne also started the match and Romelu Lukaku came
on at half-time.
The Belgians, who had dominated with Hazard much-involved, looked to have
let the win slip when the away side equalised in the 87th minute but there
was still time for a winner from PSV Eindhoven's Dries Mertens. Thibaut
Courtois was an unused sub.
Branislav Ivanovic played the first half of Serbia's 3-1 win away in
Cyprus. The score was 1-1 at the interval.
Tomas Kalas remained an unused sub for Czech Republic who without injured
Petr Cech still kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 away win in Turkey.
At Under-19 level, Nathan Ake scored a 75th-minute winner from a corner
for the Netherlands at home to Scotland. The match ended 2-1. Islam Feruz
played the first hour in attack for the Scots and hit the post, with Alex
Davey introduced at half-time.

COLE - 100 NOT OUT
Posted on: Wed 06 Feb 2013
Ashley Cole played the first 45 minutes of England's 2-1 win over Brazil
on Wednesday night and in doing so, made his 100th appearance for his
country. Frank Lampard struck the winning goal.
Everyone at Chelsea Football Club congratulates Cole on his momentous
achievement.
The 32-year-old started all 100 of those games, 48 have been as a Chelsea
player, and as a defender he can take satisfaction in England having kept
a clean sheet before half-time at Wembley tonight when he was substituted.
He joins six other centurions - Peter Shilton (125), David Beckham (115),
Bobby Moore (108), Bobby Charlton (106), Billy Wright (105) and Steven
Gerrard (101).
Cole said before the game about the milestone: 'It is a very proud moment
for me and my family.
'I'd like to say I've been consistent for 12 years playing for England.
I've gone through a few managers but to have always been in the squads and
played and gone to tournaments makes you realise that you have done a good
job for your clubs as well.'
He recalled his debut in a World Cup qualifier away in Albania in March
2001.
'I was a little bit nervous but I had trained and played and worked hard
to get to where I want to be. To get that England call-up and to get my
first game was a dream come true and I didn't want it to stop there.'
Cole was one of two Chelsea starters for the home side against Brazil.
Gary Cahill was also part of the defence, winning his 13th cap.
All three of Chelsea's Brazilians began the game. David Luiz was passed
fit after a recent calf injury and was captain. Ramires played in a deep
role with Oscar more attacking, predominantly on the right which brought
him into direct contest with Cole.
Cahill was called upon to execute a well-judged sliding tackle on Neymar
inside the area early on, and the Chelsea man again dealt with Neymar soon
after as an Oscar pass threatened to send the Santos striker through.
Oscar shot off-target soon after.
Brazil won a 17th-minute penalty for handball by Jack Wilshere but both it
and the follow-up shot were saved by Joe Hart.
Danny Welbeck missed a chance and Cole tried a rare shot from distance
before England took the lead on 25 minutes. Theo Walcott had a shot saved
but Wayne Rooney slotted the rebound.
Brazil could have equalised but Neymar could not place a wonderful Oscar
cross on-target. Walcott had a testing shot saved before the break.
Lampard came on for the second half to make his 94th England appearance.
Ramires, like Cole, was replaced at the interval.
With two minutes of the second half played, Cahill lost possession midway
inside his own half and another substitute, Fred, was able to level the
scores. The same player hit the crossbar moments later.
Cahill recovered from his mistake to stop the impressive Oscar getting in
a shot and then had a header from a corner tipped over having escaped the
marking of David Luiz.
Just before the hour, Lampard made it 2-1 with a crisp shot from the edge
of the area which went in off the post. It was a typically instinctive
finish and was England goal no. 27 for the Chelsea midfielder.
David Luiz came off on 78 minutes with no sign of injury difficulty and
England saw out the remaining minutes relatively comfortably, meriting the
win over Luiz Felipe Scolari's side and a first victory over Brazil for 23
years.

ACADEMY PAIR IN ALGARVE ACTION
Posted on: Fri 08 Feb 2013
Two Chelsea Academy players were involved on Friday afternoon in England
Under-17s' opening match in the annual Algarve Tournament in Portugal.
Midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek (pictured) and schoolboy right-back Ola Aina
both started the game but were on the losing side against Germany. England
took an early lead but against the run of play were pulled back to 1-1 by
half-time. Germany made it 2-1 shortly after the break which was the final
score. Aina was substituted on 77 minutes.
It was the first of three games in five days for England who are next in
action on Sunday when they face the host nation. They play the Netherlands
on Tuesday.
Another Chelsea schoolboy Charlie Colkett was called up for the tournament
but withdrew due to injury.
Chelsea involvement this week in internationals at Under-21 level was
completed on Thursday night when striker Milan Lalkovic came on at
half-time for Slovakia. His side beat Switzerland 1-0 thanks to a
second-half goal.

PORTUGAL PIP ACADEMY PAIR
Posted on: Sun 10 Feb 2013
Two Chelsea Academy players were part of a second narrow defeat for
England Under-17s in the annual Algarve tournament for that age group.
Having lost 2-1 on Friday despite taking the lead against Germany, the
young England side suffered a similar fate on Sunday against host nation
Portugal.
Chelsea schoolboy Ola Aina started the game and came off at half-time with
England leading 1-0. Portugal scored twice in the first 11 minutes of the
second-half before our youth team midfielder Ruben Loftus-Check (pictured),
who started the Germany game, was introduced with an hour played.
England conclude their tournament on Tuesday against the Netherlands.

NIGERIA CROWNED KINGS OF AFRICA
Posted on: Sun 10 Feb 2013
John Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and Kenneth Omeruo are tonight (Sunday)
celebrating their first major international championship after a single
goal was enough to win Nigeria the Africa Cup of Nations.
All three Chelsea men played the full 90 minutes against Burkina Faso in
Johannesburg and all played their part in the 1-0 win. The goal came late
in the first half and the victory was never really in doubt. The Nigerian
goalkeeper was truly tested only once.
Moses overcame the ankle injury that forced him off in the second half of
the semi-final and passed a late fitness test. Nigeria were however
deprived of tournament topscorer Emmanuel Emenike due to injury.
The opening half was peppered with errors, unsurprisingly so with a young
Nigerian side playing a major final against a nation not expected to make
it so far in the tournament. Super Eagles defender Efe Ambrose headed over
from a well-taken Moses free-kick in the opening minutes and Nigeria
missed another early chance after a mistake from the Burkinabe keeper.
Moses was causing more problems to the opposing side than anyone on the
pitch, switching wings and taking on full-backs. Ambrose brought the ball
forward half the length of the pitch but his pass through the middle into
the area for Moses to attack was too strong.
There was a warning for Nigeria at the other end when Bakary Kone had a
free header at the far post on 37 minutes. Burkina Faso's other first-half
efforts had been long-range shots but from closer in and a difficult angle
he could not hit the target.
Two minutes later Nigeria took the lead with Moses involved in the initial
attack. The Chelsea winger might have been fouled when twisting in the
area but he stayed on his feet and Burkina Faso's half-clearance was
picked up by Sunday Mba. He lifted the ball over a defender and then
volleyed into the net Gazza-style.
More excellent wide play by Moses gave Brown Ideye the chance to shoot
across goal two minutes after the restart but the angle was against him.
Moses then spearheaded a counter-attack into plenty of space but was
caught in two minds inside the area. His attempted pass was blocked.
On 56 minutes two Chelsea men were shown a yellow card in very quick
succession. Omeruo, our 19-year-old central defender on loan at Den Haag,
was cautioned for a foul, a touch harshly and Mikel went into the book for
disputing the decision. It was rare blot for either player on the night.
Both were solid with Nigeria on top and Mikel was voted Man of the Match.
Moses did do well as part of Nigeria's next counter-attack but the target
of his pass, substitute Ahmed Musa, stumbled at the crucial moment when
poised to score. Burkina Faso went straight on the attack and it needed a
superb diving save from Vincent Enyeama to keep out Wilfried Sanou's shot.
That was by far the closest Burkina Faso came to scoring. On this occasion
they could not produce one of the late goals that had played a big part in
reaching the final.
Instead the chances inside the final 10 minutes were all for the Super
Eagles. Moses with one was not able to get his shot away under pressure
from the keeper after some slack defending.
The final whistle gave Nigeria their third Africa Cup of Nations win.
Mikel becomes an African nations champion as well a European club
champion.
Chelsea Football Club congratulates our three Nigerian players on their
wonderful achievement.
