YOUTH REPORT: CHELSEA 3 PORTSMOUTH 0
Posted on: Sat 05 Feb 2011
Chelsea Under 18s completed an emphatic victory over a 10-man Portsmouth
at a windy Cobham today.
The Blues netted twice in the first-half, with goals coming from Walter
Figueira and Bobby Devyne, before a Danny Stenning scorcher in the second
period of play completed the triumph.
Dermot Drummy included trialist Henrik Breimyr in his side, the number 7
lined-up in a midfield diamond. Up front was Figueira and Devyne while Ben
Sampayo (pictured) captained from centre-back.
Devyne played a clever lob from the edge of the box for Chelsea's first
chance, beating the keeper before being cleared off the line by Portsmouth.
The initial ball which put Devyne in a shooting position came from
Stenning, who was playing on the tip of the diamond.
Chelsea looked strong from the off, dominating possession and swamping the
midfield. It took 10 minutes for Portsmouth to produce a shot on goal, as
their sliding number 10 clipped a cross over the bar from close range.
Chelsea immediately retaliated from the goalkick, with Figueira launching
a shot narrowly wide.
The Chelsea striker then saw a goal disallowed for offside but scored
seconds later by tapping home an Adam Nditi cross from the left flank. It
was a good finish to put Chelsea ahead after 17 minutes.
Nditi continued to threaten down the left flank and played a part in the
second goal. It was the left-back's cross which Stenning chested down
before being fouled on the edge of the box. Devyne then drilled home the
freekick with ease, slotting through the wall and into the bottom left
with 22 minutes played.
Chelsea were back in front of the visitors' goal from the restart, as a
Figueira shot was cleared off the line before Devyne won a freekick 25
yards out. Rodgers took the set piece and curled a shot just wide of the
top left.
Chelsea continued to dominate the game, with Nditi putting in a sterling
performance at left-back. Portsmouth did test goalkeeper Jamal Blackman
but didn't really look like scoring. Then they won a freekick on the edge
of the box and a clinical effort forced Blackman to punch the ball away.
Drummy made no changes at half-time and the side started as they'd
finished the first-half, with Deynve still proving troublesome down the
flanks. However, Portsmouth came out with a renewed vigour and were
testing the home side's defence in return.
Nditi was unlucky not to convert a Figueira mis-hit from close range. His
first touch controlled the ball well but his second saw a scuffed shot
right in front of goal.
Saville was then shown yellow for successive fouls before the referee
brandished a second yellow at Porstmouth's number 11. The visitors went
down to 10 men after a collision with Rodgers near the half-way line.
Minutes later Assane smashed a freekick goal-ward, the shot took a
deflection but remained on target before being pushed out for what would
be a fruitless corner.
Then Assane was shown a yellow for dissent, as was Figueira for kicking
the ball away after a foul. Chelsea were not pushing forward as they had
been and the Blues were on the back foot as Portsmouth tried to take
advantage.
But the game was killed off when Stenning made it three with his left
foot. It was an effort from 25 yards which flew into the top corner after
curling away from the keeper.
Chelsea's number 10 was putting in a good performance and soon after the
restart played a fantastic through ball for Devyne, who gathered on the
left before shooting high over the bar.
'Portsmouth tested us today and it was a good game,' said Drummy after the
result. 'Walter is linking up well, he works hard and his enthusiasm is
first class. I let the boys decide who would take the freekick, Bobby took
it and put it in the net.
'Danny has fantastic power, normally on his right foot, you don't see him
shoot often with his left and it was a fantastic goal.'
