RESERVE REPORT: MANCHESTER UNITED 4 CHELSEA 1
Posted on: Mon 18 Apr 2011
Four players were given Chelsea reserve team debuts on a night when
difficult scheduling of the fixture presented a challenge that was hard to
overcome.
The close proximity of important first team and youth team games on
Wednesday, plus many of his squad out on loan, meant a much-depleted stock
of players from which Steve Holland could select. Two of those handed
debuts were played from the start
Against more mature opposition, the Blues gave a good account of
themselves in the first half, even if play was at times scrappy at
Altrincham FC's Moss Lane.
Archange Nkumu (pictured), making his fourth reserve appearance, pulled a
goal back after Manchester United had taken a two-goal lead. The home side
dominated after the break however although Chelsea were denied a goal by
an incorrect decision by the match officials.
By the end the Blues backline was entirely first year youth team players
or schoolboys and it wasn't surprising they lacked the togetherness and
knowhow to keep Man United at bay.
Ali Gordon has played five times in the youth team this season but is
still a schoolboy and was part of the England Under 16 team that won the
Victory Shield last month. He made his reserve bow at right-back with
another debutant, Amin Affane, who is a first year scholar, at left-back.
On the bench was reserve and Academy goalkeeping coach Mark Beeney plus
first team assistant fitness coach Chris Jones who also made a reserve
appearance last season. Jones came on before the end.
Man United had three players in their starting side that have featured in
their first team this season, Gabriel Obertan up front, Bebe in midfield
and Ben Amos in goal.
Obertan raced away onto a long ball behind the Chelsea defence in the
opening minutes but was wasteful when he could only lob onto the roof of
the net. The France Under 21 international then headed a 10th minute cross
over as the early danger was all from the home side.
Conor Clifford had hit a speculative effort that was well off target and
Chelsea did threaten with a long-range dig from Adam Phillip after the two
Obertan attempts. That was tipped round the post by Ben Amos.
There was more hope for Chelsea when Kaby showed a tricky touch to make
room for a shot but playing support to centre-forward Marko Mitrovic, the
diminutive Portuguese fired wide.
Obertan rolled the ball across the Chelsea six-yard to no effect having
picked up a loose ball on the right on 19 minutes but eight minutes
Manchester United did take the lead, punishing Chelsea on the
counter-attack after dealing with a Blues corner.
It was winger Josh King who exchanged passes with an overlapping full-back
to find a way into the area before slotting low past Jan Sebek.
Two minutes later the same red-shirted player found too much space for
Chelsea's health down our right-hand side after an advanced Gordon had
given the ball away in the Man U half. King found the finish he wanted to
score inside the far post from a very acute angle. It was a steep learning
curve for a young Chelsea defence.
Adam Phillip was causing Manchester United the most problems with his
strength and powerful running on the ball, and when he was chopped down by
Robert Brady the referee showed the only yellow card of the game.
On 36 minutes Chelsea pulled a goal back and it was a first reserve team
goal to be proud of for 17-year-old centre-back Nkumu, heading in a Gokhan
Tore free-kick with enough power and precision to leave the keeper rooted.
Shortly before the interval Chelsea were depleted further when Kaby was
carried off in pain, but he recovered to return to the fray seconds before
the whistle blew on a half that left the Blues trailing by a single goal.
Bebe was denied by a Sebek save with his feet 90 seconds after the restart
after a retreating Affane was dispossessed by the Man United player.
Obertan then ended a long period of Man United possession with a shot that
was deflected wide by Sebek's arm.
The schoolboy count doubled shortly before the hour mark when Chelsea
captain Carl Magnay's first start in 13 months came to an end. Alex Davey
was the young replacement - another reserve debutant. At the same time the
coaching staff were called into action with Jones on for Kaby.
Obertan finally got his goal a minute after those changes when not for the
first time he nipped behind the Chelsea central defence when the ball was
played down the middle. Sebek tried to intercept on the edge of the area
but failed, leaving the Man U striker with a straightforward task.
Chelsea had the ball in the net soon after when Mitrovic's turn and shot
rebounded of the keeper and then back in off a defender, but the offside
flag was up, an incorrect decision by a linesman who must have believed
the adjacent Phillip made the last touch.
The Blues were behind but showing spirit. Tore made Amos save.
The schoolboy debutants became three before the end when Walter Figueira
replaced Michael Woods, another of the more experienced reserves just back
from injury.
Man United substitute Jack Rudge should have added their fourth goal
before Bebe did with nine minutes left on the clock. Again a long pass had
found a red shirt alone between the Chelsea defence and keeper.
In 48 hours' time the youth team will play away to Man United, defending
one-goal lead at Old Trafford as they look to make the FA Youth Cup Final
for a third time in four years.
