Daniel Sousa makes it two members of trusted staff that have accompanied
Andre Villas-Boas on his move from Portugal to Chelsea. Following our

At 26 years of age, Daniel Sousa is the same age Andre Villas-Boas was
when he began work as Chelsea's head of opposition scouting.
Back then in 2004, it was a new full-time position at the club that the
now Chelsea manager took on. Seven years later it is inconceivable that a
top-level club would not have such a member of staff on board and it is
clear Villas-Boas values Sousa's contribution, having taken him with him
in two changes of club to fulfil a role that the man in charge understands
inside out.
'I've had a very short career in professional football,' admits Sousa,
speaking to ChelseaFC.com in good English.
'I started in this area, scouting, with Academica two weeks before Andre
started there. Then I moved to Porto the next season and the job that I do
now. Before Academica I worked in coaching youth from Porto and other
teams in the city of Porto. It is my history, but it is a short history,'
he smiles.
Lengthening the story a little, a knee problem meant Sousa, who was born
in Barcelos which is located north of Porto near Braga, had to give up
playing football when he was young so he took the sports science path.
He studied at Porto University, as had Chelsea's new fitness coach Jose
Mario Rocha some years earlier. In the third year of a five-year course
Sousa chose to specialise in football and hasn't looked back, playing his
part in Porto's momentous 2010/11 season by arming Villas-Boas and his
players with information they needed to win a multitude of medals.
'The study of the opponent is very important but there are many steps that
improve the development of the players,' Sousa states.
'I won't say my work is the same work as all the other teams do, although
all the teams study their opponents. But I don't reveal what I do!
'For me it is a privilege to work for Andre because he knows this
position and he helped me a lot in my work and planning.'
Moving to England without family, in common with the other Portuguese
coaching staff Sousa will make his home in central London.
'This is an exciting week,' he says. 'Some of the players you are used to
seeing on TV, not for real but they all seem very nice people.
'The things that Andre said in his first press conference at Chelsea apply
to me too. The jump over these three or four years was amazing. It is
exciting because it is a new environment at Chelsea and now I have to
adapt myself to what the club have.
'We have very nice conditions to do the best work possible and I am going
to try to create a dynamic with the guys who are with me now to work on
scouting.'
