FINAL HURT FOR KALAS
Posted on: Mon 01 Aug 2011
Chelsea's young central defender Tomas Kalas was denied a European Under
19 winners' medal by a Spain side that came from behind twice to beat
Czech Republic in extra time.
Kalas, who joined Chelsea last season, played the full final in Romania
against the four times previous winners at this age level and his side
went into the lead shortly after half-time, only to be pegged back five
minutes before the end of normal time.
The Czech Under 19s retook the lead midway through the first period of
extra time but two Spanish goals in the second period, the winner again
five minutes from the whistle decided the match
Kalas played every minute as his nation reached the final for the first
time and scored in the semi-final.

FRANCE IMPROVE AT U20 WORLD CUP
Posted on: Wed 03 Aug 2011
There was a better day for Gael Kakuta and France when they made their
second appearance at the Under 20 World Cup in Colombia.
Having lost their opening fixture 4-1 to the host nation, there was no
margin left for error and despite netting first, the score was 1-1 going
into the last 10 minutes of their group match against South Korea. But
then the French took the lead again on 81 minutes with a fortuitous goal,
and after their keeper had made a superb save, they made it 3-1 in
stoppage time. Kakuta played the first 76 minutes.
France, level on points with the Koreans and three behind Colombia, now
play Mali on Friday who are without a point after two games. Two sides
progress to the next stage.
Chelsea left-back Ben Gordon was an unused sub in England's second game
which like their first was scoreless, this time against Argentina. England
now play Mexico.

MORE WOE FOR DELAC IN U20S
Posted on: Thu 04 Aug 2011
It was another painful day for Matej Delac at the Under 20 World Cup on
Wednesday, his Croatia side beaten 5-2 by Nigeria.
The Chelsea goalkeeper, who spent last season on loan with Dutch side
Vitesse Arnhem, was helpless to prevent a second successive defeat for the
Croatians, who cannot now qualify for the knockout rounds.
Nigeria led 2-1 at the break as Delac found himself repeatedly exposed,
but with the score at 3-2 with just over 20 minutes remaining it looked
like Croatia had a chance, only for two goals in four minutes to prove
their undoing in the Colombian city of Armenia.
Croatia now meet Guatemala in their final group game on Saturday before
flying home.

GORDON’S U20 WORLD CUP BEGINS
Posted on: Fri 05 Aug 2011
Reserve team left-back Ben Gordon made his first appearance at the Under
20 World Cup as England kept alive hopes of progressing to the next stage
of the tournament.
A 0-0 draw with Mexico was the third goalless stalemate for the young
England side but although they finish outside the top two in their group
who are guaranteed progression, their three points give them a good chance
of going through as one of the best third-placed sides.
Gordon (pictured front row, second from the right), who had been an unused
sub in the first two group games, played the full 90 minutes of the match
against Mexico which was played in the Columbian city of Cartagena.
The player first joined Chelsea in 2007 and has been on loan at Tranmere,
Kilmarnock and Scunthorpe.
Gael Kakuta and France are in action on Friday at the Under 20 World Cup.
They play Mali, a side with many France-based players. A win for France
would all but secure their place in the next round.

KAKUTA STAYS IN SOUTH AMERICA
Posted on: Sat 06 Aug 2011
Gael Kakuta played the first half against Mali as France progressed into
the knockout stages of the Under 20 World Cup in Colombia.
Having lost their first group game heavily, the French have recovered with
two wins and go through as the second-placed side.
On Friday they beat Mali 2-0 with the goals coming in the second half,
Kakuta having had a shot blocked early in the first half.
New signing Oriol Romeu and keeper Matej Delac are in action on Saturday
for Spain Under 20s and Croatia Under 20s respectively.

THREE OUT OF FOUR MAKE U20 KNOCKOUT
Posted on: Sat 06 Aug 2011
The group stage of the Under 20 World Cup in Colombia is now complete and
Chelsea will have good representation in the last 16.
Only goalkeeper Matej Delac has been eliminated so far. Croatia suffered a
third defeat out of three when they were beaten 1-0 by Guatemala.
England, with left-back Ben Gordon in their squad, did make it through as
one of the best third-placed sides after the group stage. They now play
Nigeria on Wednesday.
On the same day Gael Kakuta's France face Ecuador. The French were runners
up in their group behind the host nation.
Wednesday is also the date of Spain's match against South Korea.
New-signing Oriol Romeu missed Spain's final group game, an impressive 5-1
win over Australia, having been booked in the two previous matches.
Spain won all three group games with a +9 goal difference.
