BLUES COMPETE IN EURO QUALIFIERS
Posted on: Sat 03 Sep 2011
John Terry captained England to a 3-0 win over Bulgaria on Friday night,
playing alongside Chelsea team mates Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard in the
Euro 2012 qualifier.
Terry and Cole both played the full 90 minutes, while Lampard came on as a
second-half substitute, replacing Gareth Barry after 80 minutes.
Gary Cahill opened the scoring for England during the Group G game before
a Wayne Rooney brace made it 3-0 before half-time. England top Group G
with 14 points from six games.
Romelu Lukaku started for Belgium during their 1-1 draw with Azerbaijan
and played 61 minutes before being replaced by Igor De Camargo. Timmy
Simmons put Belgium ahead after 55 minutes before Rauf Aliyev equalised
four minutes from full-time.
Belgium are now third in Group A, with 12 points from eight games, while
Germany top the group with 24 points.
Branislav Ivanovic played 90 minutes for Serbia during their 1-0 win over
Northern Ireland. Marko Pantelic was the goalscorer in that game. Serbia
are now third in Group C, equal on points with second-place Slovenia. They
have 11 points and a game in hand over Slovenia while Italy lead the group.
France maintained their top spot in Group D with the help of Florent
Malouda, who played 82 minutes during their 2-1 win over Albania. Karim
Benzema put France in front after 11 minutes and Yann M'Vila made it two
on 18 minutes. Erjon Bogdani scored Albania's only goal after 46 minutes.
Raul Meireles' Portugal beat Cyprus 4-0 thanks a Cristiano Ronaldo brace
and two late goals from substitutes Hugo Almeida and Danny. Portugal are
top of Group H with 11 points, although Norway sit second with the same
points. Jose Bosingwa was not involved.
Fernando Torres and Juan Mata were both on the bench for Spain's 3-2 win
over Chile. Torres came on after 64 minutes during the friendly but Mata
didn't play. A Cesc Fabregas brace and an Andres Iniesta strike sealed the
win for Spain. Eduardo Vargas and Mauricio Isla netted Chile's two.

KALOU ON TARGET IN AFRICA
Posted on: Sun 04 Sep 2011
Salomon Kalou scored his 13th international goal as Ivory Coast made light
of the absence of Didier Drogba by hammering Rwanda in an Africa Cup of
Nations qualifier on Saturday.
The Ivorians had already ensured their place at the finals of the
tournament to be held early in 2012 and they made it five wins from five
with a 5-0 away win in Kigali.
Kalou, winning his 39th cap, was in attack with recent Arsenal signing
Gervinho, Drogba having remained in England as he recovers from
concussion, and it was the Chelsea striker who opened the scoring after
Rwanda had held out for 35 minutes.
Two more goals before half-time put the game beyond the home team's reach
and the further two goals in the second half take The Elephants total in
qualification to 17, the most from any of the groups.

MIKEL SUCCESS IN MADAGASCAR
Posted on: Mon 05 Sep 2011
John Mikel Obi played a part in keeping alive Nigeria's hopes of
qualification for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations with his team winning on
Sunday.
Anything less than victory away against Madagascar on a very poor pitch
would have eliminated the Super Eagles from a place in the tournament that
begins in January, but two second-half goals were enough for a 2-0 win.
It is rare to see Mikel take a set-piece while wearing a Chelsea shirt but
it was the midfielder's corner that was headed in by Joseph Yobo to open
the scoring on 68 minutes. Victor Obinna hit the second goal from long
range.
The build-up to the match involved Madagascar changing their coach and
talk of their whole team being replaced by Under 23 players due to poor
displays and they remain bottom of their group with a single point.
Nigeria on 10 points are three behind Guinea whom they must beat away in
the next match by at least two goals to guarantee a place in the ACN
Finals. Those are to be jointly hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
The last qualifier is in October but next up for Nigeria is a friendly on
Tuesday against Argentina, held on neutral turf in Bangladesh.

INTERNATIONALS: NIGHT OF PROGRESS TOWARDS EURO 2012..
Posted on: Wed 07 Sep 2011
Juan Mata helped reigning European champions Spain to qualify for next
summer's tournament thanks to a big win on a Tuesday night of
international matches.
The new Chelsea signing played all 90 minutes of a 6-0 home win over
Liechenstein who kept the game at 0-0 for 33 minutes before the floodgates
opened. Fernando Torres however was not in the Spain starting line-up, nor
on the bench.
Frank Lampard returned to the England starting 11 for a 1-0 Wembley win
over Wales but didn't end the game.
Playing in the middle of the more advanced midfield line in a 4-2-3-1
formation, he was on the pitch for 73 minutes before being replaced by
Scott Parker. By that stage of the game England were ahead and John Terry
and Ashley Cole played the whole of the game although the England defence
was fortunate to record a clean sheet when Robert Earnshaw missed badly in
the closing stages.

Terry
England now need a point from their final game in Montenegro to qualify
for Euro 2012.
Branislav Ivanovic and Serbia did concede a home goal against Faroe
Islands but won the match 3-1, although they now look towards the
play-offs as their route to the finals after a victory for Italy on
Tuesday night secured the Azzurri top spot in their group. Serbia in
second place are a point ahead of Estonia with a game in hand.
Florent Malouda watched from the bench as France laboured to a 0-0 draw in
Romania that leaves them with a one-point lead over Bosnia and Herzegovina
whom they host in their final qualifier, a home game against Albania to
come first.
Romelu Lukaku came on in the 63rd minute of Belgium's 1-0 home win in a
friendly fixture against a USA side managed by Jurgen Klinsmann. Belgium
had netted their goal by the time the new Chelsea striker entered the game.
Away from Europe, John Mikel Obi captained Nigeria in a friendly against
Argentina held in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka. He centred the ball for
his team's goal but that came with Argentina 2-0 up, one of those goals
created when Lionel Messi dispossessed Mikel on the halfway line. The
final score was 3-1.
At Under 21 level, Conor Clifford played the whole of Republic of
Ireland's 1-0 defeat in Turkey in a qualifier for the next European
championships. There was a better result for Milan Lalkovic as Slovakia
beat Kazakhstan 1-0 away. He too played 90 minutes.
Tomas Kalas played the whole of Czech Republic Under 21s' 1-1 draw at home
to Armenia. Rhys Taylor was an unused sub in a game in the same group.
Wales lost 3-1 in Montenegro.
A day earlier, Oriol Romeu, recently back from the Under 20 World Cup,
played 86 minutes of Spain Under 21s' 2-0 win at home to Georgia, on the
back of 90 minutes on Thursday in a 7-2 win away to the same side.
Also during the last week Marko Mitrovic made his debut for Sweden Under
19s and scored the third goal in a 3-0 away win over Finland. He also
created one of the goals.
Nathanial Chalobah made the step up from England Under 17s to Under 19s
for the first time in a 0-0 draw away to Holland. Aziz Deen-Conteh won his
fourth U19 cap in the same game.
