YOUTH REPORT: CHELSEA 5 PORTSMOUTH 2
Posted on: Sat 10 Dec 2011
Chelsea made it five successive wins with a 5-2 victory against Portsmouth
at Cobham. Goals from Tom Howard, Islam Feruz, Reece Mitchell, Lewis Baker
and Ismael Seremba secured the win for Adi Viveash's men following an
impressive display.
Chelsea started well and could have been in front inside two minutes when
a Lucas Piazon [pictured] effort was spilled for Feruz to slot home, but
the effort was deemed offside.
Minutes later and the Blues were in front; a free kick by Amin Affane
cannoned against the wall and Howard's looping delivery back into the box
evaded everybody and dropped beyond Matthew Gledhill in the Portsmouth
goal to give the Blues the lead.
The home side began the game in confident mood, imposing themselves on the
visitors almost at will. The Brazilian Piazon was eager to get on the ball
and orchestrate things as often as possible and his quality was clearly
apparent in the early stages.
Nathan Ake brought the ball out of defence and floated a delightful ball
over the top which Feruz almost got on the end of but Portsmouth managed
to clear the danger.
Alex Davey then crumbled to the floor in agony under no pressure
whatsoever; the youngster appeared to be in serious trouble and was
quickly taken off, replaced by Archange Nkumu.
Minutes later and the injury curse struck again, this time the goalscorer
Howard going off to be replaced Seremba.
John Swift then did well to release Feruz but the forward was pulled back
on the edge of the box giving the Blues a free kick in a dangerous
position. Baker was the man entrusted with converting, but he could only
manage to fire his effort straight at the wall.
The hosts were playing some nice stuff but struggling to penetrate the
Portsmouth back four; Baker tried his luck with a speculative effort from
distance but saw it sail harmlessly over the bar.
Portsmouth gradually began to come into the match as the half wore on
without ever really testing Mitchell Beeney in the Chelsea goal, and the
keeper, who only came into the side shortly before kick-off, spent the
opening 45 minutes as a virtual spectator.
Portsmouth began the second spell well, forcing a free kick with some neat
play down the left, and they should have been level a minute later when
James Jennings fired wide when he should have at least tested Beeney.
The scare seemed to spark Chelsea into life as we began to press for a
second goal. Baker came close, firing wide from the edge of the box at the
culmination of a move the midfielder had started himself.
It was 2-0 a minute later though when a delightful ball by Piazon released
Feruz, and the striker wasn't to be denied this time, finishing cooly for
his fifth goal of the season as the goalie advanced off his line.
Piazon, in particular, was proving a constant thorn in Portsmouth's side,
and he almost made the game certain in the 57th minute when he beat two
defenders before seeing his finish brush past the post.
Portsmouth were back in the game in the 60th minute against the run of
play though, when a poor clearance by Nditi fell straight to the feet of
Jed Wallace on the edge of the box, who sent his shot beyond the
despairing dive of Beeney.
The two-goal cushion was restored only three minutes later however, when
Todd Kane released Seremba down the right; the substitute fired across
goal and Mitchell made no mistake from close range to put the Blues firmly
back in the driving seat.
Seremba was giving the Portsmouth left-back an uncomfortable time and
better deliveries on more than one occasion might well have given the
Blues further opportunities to seal the win, and he was almost on the
scoresheet himself when a deflected effort was well saved.
Portsmouth were back in it again in the 77th minute when Samuel Magri
converted a penalty following what the Blues' defence perceived as a
dubious decision.
Two minutes later and the Blues were awarded a penalty themselves when
Feruz went down in the box. Baker stepped up and confidently sent the
keeper the wrong way, and it was nothing more than his performance
warranted.
The game was finally put to bed with three minutes remaining. Some great
build-up play by Piazon allowed substitute Mitchell to cross to the back
post where Seremba couldn't miss.
The three-goal cushion was probably just about right given the Blues'
overall dominance, and they go into Wednesday's game in great spirits.
Viveash was delighted with his side's performance, saying: 'I thought we
played some outstanding football and some of it was the best we've played
all season. I was disappointed with the goals we conceded but it's given
us a warning before Wednesday's FA Youth Cup game.
'We need to take that level of performance into the game, and that level
of intensity as well. Feruz has been scoring goals all season and he got
another good one today.
'The young boys, Seremba and Mitchell came in and did very well, and
that's great because we've got a fantastic pool of Under 16s to choose
from.'
