Simon Johnson - 23 January 2013
When Branislav Ivanovic walks out onto the pitch at the Liberty Stadium
tonight, redemption rather than Wembley, will be at the forefront of his
mind.
Over the past fortnight, the Chelsea defender has been haunted by the two
mistakes which gifted Swansea a 2-0 win in the first leg of their Capital
One Cup semi-final and he is determined to make amends.
Since the Serbia international joined the club from Lokomotiv Moscow for
£9.7million five years ago, errors have been few and far between but he
had a night to forget against Michael Laudrup’s side at Stamford Bridge.
After being caught in possession on the edge of his own area to allow
Michu to score in the first half, he was also punished for a terrible back
pass just before the final whistle when Danny Graham added the second.
It was hard to tell who was more shocked by the defender's performance,
the Chelsea supporters, his team-mates or Ivanovic himself. Such was the
centre-back's dismay, he stormed off the pitch at the final whistle
before issuing a personal apology to everyone in the dressing room
afterwards.
However, the 28-year-old knows the only way to put things right is to help
the team overturn the two-goal deficit to reach next month's final.
Ivanovic told Standard Sport: “The first match was a very difficult game
for us and for me it was probably my worst game for Chelsea. I apologised
to everyone afterwards in the dressing room. That is normal, to admit you
made a mistake, but you have to be mentally strong and mentally ready to
forget these things.
“I was very disappointed but the good thing about football is that you
always have tomorrow. I would like to play against Swansea to put things
right, to stay focused and get the team to Wembley.
“I will try to forget that happened and in this game everything is new
again and anything can happen. We are 2-0 down but we will not give up and
will try to do everything that we can to get to Wembley. It is vital not
to let them score and if we get the first goal we are right back in the
game.
“So the defensive line is going to be very important and I have to be
mentally right so I don't make the same mistakes as I did in the first
leg.”
Ivanovic is no stranger to helping Chelsea stage a fightback against the
odds for he was one of the stars in their dramatic Champions League
success last season.
They were in a similarly dire position when they trailed Napoli 3-1 from
the first leg of their last-16 tie. They won the return match last March
4-1, with Ivanovic scoring the decisive fourth goal and it provided the
springboard to lifting the trophy two months later.
The main difference was Chelsea played the second leg against the Italians
at home whereas they will be in south Wales this time but Ivanovic still
feels that his side's greater experience of performing under such pressure
will give them an advantage.
He added: “We have shown many times in the past that we have the power to
come back in situations like this. We can't change what happened in the
first game but we can do everything to change this one.
“We have experienced and quality players who can change it in one moment,
with one pass or one shot. All of us still believe. Two-nil is a big
advantage for them but that means nothing, really.”
Rafael Benitez's team selection could prove vital with new signing Demba
Ba competing with Fernando Torres for a starting role up front.
Ba has scored three goals since joining from Newcastle for £7.5m at the
start of the month, while Torres (above, second image) hasn't found the
net in his last seven appearances.
But Ivanovic feels both forwards could play a crucial part in progressing
to next month's final and for the rest of the season.
He said: “It is really good to have two strikers to choose from and to
have a lot of competition between them.
“It was very difficult to play all the season with just one striker but
now we have Demba Ba, too. He is a great player, knows the League and is
physically very strong. He works very hard for the team and has already
scored goals, which is important for his confidence. We expect him to get
better and better.
“I know we can play in games, including Swansea, with both strikers and
that would be good for the team. Demba is fantastic, Fernando also and we
can work on playing both of them together. It's going to be great for the
team.
“Yes [Fernando is up for the challenge]. All this pressure is familiar
for Fernando. He has the support of every team-mate and it is important
for him to score and work hard in training every day. They are not against
each other, they can play together and help the team.”
Still, if Chelsea are to reach their sixth Wembley final in as many years,
Ivanovic knows that one of the signings of the season will have to be
stopped.
Michu's goal in the first match was his 16th since joining from Rayo
Vallecano for £2m last summer and Ivanovic concluded: “He is in that
form strikers can get into where every time he shoots, he scores. It means
we have to stay concentrated. He has great quality and ability to play.
This is an extra motivation for us to stop a player like him.”
And no one will be more motivated to do just that than Ivanovic.
