UEFA Youth League Report: Chelsea 6 Sporting Lisbon 0
Wed, 10 Dec 2014
Our Under-19s ended their group stage in style and secured top spot. Adi
Viveash's side needed a victory to guarantee first place and a home tie in
the one-legged last-16 and they achieved it comfortably.
A first-half brace from Jeremie Boga and a goal in between from Dominic
Solanke gave the hosts a 3-0 lead at the break and they added a further
three in the second half. Solanke completed his hat-trick and Charly
Musonda added a sixth from a set-piece.
== Team news ==
There were three changes from the side beaten 2-0 away to Schalke in the
Under-19s' last outing a fortnight ago. The back five remained unchanged,
with Bradley Collins in goal and a defence consisting of Andreas
Christensen, Fikayo Tomori, Ola Aina and Jay Dasilva.
Musonda and Boga came into the team to join captain Izzy Brown in the
attacking support for striker Solanke, while Charlie Colkett and Ruben
Sammut combined to form the deeper midfield pair.
== First half ==
Sporting, managed by former Premier League forward Luis Boa Morte, started
brightly and Collins was called into action twice inside the opening 10
minutes. He gathered comfortably from Rafael Barbosa's drive after a
couple of minutes before racing off his line to thwart Jose Postiga as the
forward escaped in behind the Blues defence. That save was a good one but,
with the ball still trickling towards his unguarded goal, it required
Christensen to mop up and clear to safety.
Musonda brought a save from Sporting keeper Jose Marinheiro after
Solanke's clever cutback to the young Belgian and it wasn't long before
the deadlock was broken. A free-kick was won in a dangerous central
position 25 yards from goal. Boga stepped up to bend it in brilliantly
beyond the despairing dive of the goalkeeper for his third goal of this
European campaign.
The lead brought more confidence to Viveash's side and they went close to
doubling their advantage almost instantly. Solanke and Brown's neat
exchange fashioned a great opportunity for the frontman but his strike was
deflected behind by a brave defensive block.
The young Blues did secure a two-goal cushion midway through the half and
it arrived courtesy of another set-piece. Solanke won a free-kick on the
right touchline and Colkett's deep inswinging delivery proved difficult
for the Portuguese defenders. Christensen managed to escape round the back
with a clever run and, after nodding back across goal, Solanke applied a
simple finish from a couple of yards out.
It was Chelsea in control for the remainder of the half, passing with
accuracy and purpose as they continued to carve out chances. Marinheiro
denied Boga and Solanke in quick succession, however he was unable to
prevent the Blues adding a third goal in the final minute of the half.
Solanke and Boga combined intricately in tight space inside the penalty
area and the Frenchman was clinical as he received the return pass,
finding the bottom corner with a close-range finish.
== Second half ==
Jake Clarke-Salter, who last week signed his first professional contract,
came on for the restart and the Blues were eager to continue their
impressive play. They quickly netted a fourth goal. The excellent Boga fed
the overlapping Christensen down the right channel and the Danish youth
international unselfishly squared the ball across the face of goal. It
handed the lurking Solanke another finish from close range.
Musonda added a sixth as the final 10 minutes approached, firing a
brilliant 30-yard free-kick into the far corner as the hosts did the
necessary work to finish ahead of Schalke in the group courtesy of their
superior head-to-head record.
== Manager reaction ==
Adi Viveash praised his side for a brilliant performance and some
breathtaking attacking play. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he
said: 'There was a little bit of pressure on us but it was a fantastic
performance.
'We scored some great goals, showed some super movement and scored a
couple of excellent free-kicks - but we also demonstrated good discipline
as well. Ruben Sammut was excellent in that sense; the speed of the game
is different to the Under-18s but he learnt about that through the game
and was very good.
'We're in the last-16, we're at home and we look forward to the draw now,
as well as looking forward to this evening. A big part of today for us as
an Academy is Ruben Loftus-Cheek being involved with the first team, as an
18-year-old who has been here for 10 years.
'It's a big night for him and his family but also for all the coaches who
have worked with him over the years. He's had a very good five months with
us at the start of the season and he gets the reward for that tonight.'
Next up for the Academy is a trip to West Ham for the youth team on
Saturday, before Viveash's Under-21s host Sunderland in a league encounter
at Cobham on Sunday afternoon.
