U18南區聯賽第11輪精華 https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2015/10/ under-18s-report--chelsea-v-reading.html Under-18s report: Chelsea 2 Reading 0 Sat 24 Oct 2015 Chelsea Under-18s extended their lead at the top of the south section of the Under-18 Premier League with victory in a top-of-the-table encounter at Cobham this morning (Saturday). Charlie Wakefield's goal at the end of the first half was reward for a positive display and substitute Harvey St Clair appeared to have put the game to bed as he notched his second in two games 16 minutes from time. A red card moments later for Ali Suljic looked like it may cause a nervy ending, though the youngsters kept control of proceedings as they moved four points clear of the Royals in the league table. There were four changes from the side that snatched a point at Fulham a week previously courtesy of a Richard Nartey goal deep into stoppage time. Nartey kept his place in the side as the young Blues tweaked their shape to a 3-4-2-1 system, with Swedish pair Suljic and Joseph Colley joining him in a back three. Wakefield and Miro Muheim started as right and left wing-backs respectively, with captain Trevoh Chalobah and Ruben Sammut lining up in central midfield. Jacob Maddox and Mason Mount operated in more advanced central roles, with Hubert Adamczyk leading the line up front. Nartey's late equaliser at Motspur Park ensured the Blues went into the top-of-the-table clash against the Royals with one more point than their opponents, however the nature of the opening on a grey morning at Cobham indicated there would be little to separate the two sides. Mount fired a free-kick straight into the wall as the home side looked to break down the visitors with patient build-up play, while Sam Smith saw a shot blocked well down the other end before captain Josh Barrett sidestepped Suljic's tackle but failed to trouble Thompson with a tame low shot. The league leaders grew into the half as they looked to break through an organised Reading rearguard but Luke Southwood in the visiting goal remained largely untroubled as the interval approached. Wakefield delivered a number of teasing deliveries from the right but those in the box failed to anticipate the flight of the ball quickly enough, while Mount saw a drive blocked behind as he and Maddox began to impact the game more in the final third. Space was opening up in the game and opportunities were fashioned more often. A quick break involving Sammut, Adamczyk and Muheim provided a warning as the latter's cross just evaded the supporting cast, before the deadlock was broken three minutes before the interval. Chalobah combined well with Mount before supplying a perfect delivery for Wakefield to prod the ball beyond the scrambling Southwood from close range for his third goal of the season. Barrett came close to levelling moments before the break as his floated free-kick arrowed towards the far corner, however a fingertip save from Thompson helped divert the ball behind for a corner. The hosts remained in the ascendancy after the restart and could have doubled their lead within a couple of minutes. Muheim twisted and turned away from Daniel Akinwunmi down the left flank before finding Mount in the box, yet the midfielder's quick shot at goal was palmed away by the goalkeeper and the linesman's flag ruled out Wakefield's finish on the rebound. The lively Wakefield fired over the angle of bar and post after cutting inside dangerously from the right flank, though the Blues were unable to double their advantage during a strong opening spell to the second half and the visitors grew back into the contest. Smith headed just wide and Suljic blocked well as Barrett's low strike looked to be causing a problem for Thompson. After riding out that tough spell, the home side were celebrating as they doubled their advantage in the 74th minute. It was a brilliant goal as Chalobah won possession smartly in midfield and fed Maddox, who shifted the ball left to substitute St Clair. The winger turned neatly on the edge of the box and fired his drive through the legs of Akinwunmi and into the far bottom corner. Any comfort that might have been felt having established that two-goal lead was soon wiped out as we were reduced to 10 men two minutes later. Suljic slipped on the turf under pressure from the forward and was adjudged to have used his hand to divert the ball away as he fell. The referee had no option but to brandish the red card and ensure the game remained very much alive for the final quarter of an hour. Thompson thwarted Harrison Bennett with a decent stop, yet the Blues kept their composure and controlled proceedings through the final exchanges to claim a fifth home win from five games this season. == Manager reaction == Jody Morris, the Under-18s' assistant coach, took charge of the game once again in Joe Edwards's absence and he spoke to the official Chelsea website afterwards to reflect on a pleasing performance and an important result. 'We're really happy with the performance,' he said. 'The players stuck to the game plan really well. We know that Reading are a very effective counter-attacking team which is why we changed the formation to play with three at the back, with Trevoh and Ruben in front to offer that little bit extra protection. We were quite pleased with how that worked and how we restricted their chances. 'We made a point before the game about how Reading had done the double over us last season so we wanted to put that right. We're confident we can beat anybody at home and the clean sheet was important too because we targeted that as our first and foremost aim today. We felt our attacking quality would shine through if we could remain tight at the back and that's exactly how it panned out.' The youth team return to league action next Saturday 31 October when they host Norwich City. Before then, Adi Viveash's Under-21s host both Manchester City and Tottenham at Aldershot Town next week. The first of those is this Monday 26 October, with entry free for all spectators. Chelsea (3-4-2-1) Jared Thompson Joseph Colley Ali Suljic Richard Nartey (Luke McCormick 74) C.
