The home side were frustrated for long periods by a Reading back-line that worked hard and lined up deep across the field. Yet Tariq Uwakwe's goal after 70 minutes and substitute Charlie Brown's stoppage-time strike won the game and made it consecutive 1-0 wins for our youngsters. Jody Morris made five changes from our last outing, a 1-0 home win against West Ham a fortnight ago. Reece James, Marc Guehi, Conor Gallagher, George McEachran and Uwakwe returned to the side, with James and Guehi joining captain Josh Grant and Cole Dasilva in a back four protecting Jamie Cumming in goal. The Blues operated with a diamond in midfield from the start as Luke McCormick anchored just behind Uwakwe and Gallagher. McEachran lined in the number 10 role behind strikers Harvey St Clair and Martell Taylor-Crossdale. Morris's side came into the third-versus-second league encounter having not been beaten at home in 22 matches and they asserted their typical control on the game from the first whistle. St Clair came within inches of converting McEachran's low cross with just 20 seconds on the clock, before Taylor-Crossdale fired narrowly wide. Royals keeper Liam Driscoll made a good stop after 10 minutes to deny St Clair, smothering the ball at the forward's feet after a smart pass forward from Gallagher. James and Gallagher then brought saves from the visiting stopper before Grant made an excellent last-ditch challenge to deny Joel Rollinson in the opposite box. Rollinson then tested Cumming at the near post as the sides went in goalless at the break before Driscoll saved James's fierce rising drive shortly after the restart. The visitors looked brighter on the ball and in attacking areas in the early part of the second half. Striker Ben House fired into the side-netting before Ade Shokunbi shot wide. However, the young Blues remained a threat and St Clair went agonisingly close as his driven delivery flashed across the face of goal. The breakthrough finally arrived after 70 minutes and it was Morris's men celebrating after a slick passing move, our best passage of the morning. McEachran released Dasilva down the left flank and his cross was teed up by Taylor-Crossdale for Uwakwe to steer into an unguarded net. The onus was on Reading to respond now and they went close to an instant reply as Teddy Howe's low cross was diverted inches wide of his own post by skipper Grant. Guehi then made a terrific block to deny Loader, while Ramarni Medford-Smith shot straight at Cumming as the visitors swung the balance of the game in their favour. Cumming was called into action again moments later, pushing away a dangerous drive before denying Loader with his feet and then watching as the Reading midfielder blazed over the crossbar following a bright advance. Brown sealed the points with virtually the game's final kick, moving cleverly away from Harry Philby in the box before curling a strike into the bottom far corner. The youngsters return to action next weekend with a trip to Tottenham.
